Chapter 8 - THE LAST SECRET

We thought the worst was over.

It wasn't.

A package arrived at the foundation.

Inside was an old photograph.

My mother.

Holding three babies.

Then a note.

There was a fourth.

We stared at the photograph.

Four babies?

My father denied it.

“I don't remember a fourth child.”

Evelyn looked at the image.

“Neither do I.”

Samuel studied the photograph.

Then pointed.

“Look.”

Behind my mother was a hospital room number.

We searched the hospital archive.

Room 214 had been closed for renovations twenty-five years ago.

But one surviving record remained.

An infant girl had been transferred from that room.

No name.

No parent.

No death certificate.

We followed the trail.

The girl had been adopted by a couple in Oregon.

She had grown up under another name.

Her name was Lily.

When we met her, she was twenty-four.

She looked at us.

Then at the photograph.

“That's my mother.”

We stared.

Our mother's face.

Lily was our youngest sister.

My father collapsed into a chair when he saw her.

Four children.

Four lives.

Four secrets.

The family had spent twenty-six years believing we were three.

Now there were four.

Lily had been hidden because she carried the final key to the trust.

A genetic marker.

The only person capable of unlocking the digital archive.

Our enemies had spent decades trying to locate her.

Now she was standing in front of us.

For the first time, our father cried openly.

“My children.”

Lily hugged him.

“I've been looking for you too.”

It was the final missing piece.

The trust could now be fully restored.

The family was finally complete.

But justice still had one chapter left.

Marcus's trial.
