Chapter 6 - THE GHOST RETURNS

Marcus tried to leave.

Security stopped him.

He looked at me again.

“Who are you?”

“You know.”

He stared at Evelyn.

“No.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Hello, Marcus.”

He turned pale.

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

The woman everyone believed had vanished was standing beneath the chandeliers.

Alive.

Marcus's allies began making phone calls.

Julian walked onto the stage.

“Ladies and gentlemen.”

The room quieted.

“Tonight, our family has something to reveal.”

The first screen displayed my childhood photograph.

A little girl with bandages covering her face.

Then the photograph disappeared.

A new image appeared.

Me.

Without them.

The crowd gasped.

Marcus looked terrified.

My father walked onto the stage.

“I spent twenty-six years hiding my daughter.”

He paused.

“I told her she was protecting herself from a deformity.”

He looked toward me.

“I was wrong.”

“You were protecting her from people.”

Marcus shouted:

“Stop!”

Nobody listened.

Then Evelyn appeared on the screen.

Her original birth certificate.

Her DNA report.

Her hidden identity.

The room became chaotic.

Marcus tried to interrupt.

“This is fabricated!”

Julian stepped forward.

“The documents are certified.”

Marcus looked toward the exits.

Police entered.

Then federal investigators.

Marcus was surrounded.

The evidence was clear.

He had altered the trust.

He had manipulated records.

He had helped erase Evelyn.

And he had spent years stealing from the Black Crown Trust.

He was arrested.

But there was another surprise.

Victor Hart was still alive.

He had been living overseas.

When authorities arrested him two weeks later, he immediately blamed Marcus.

Marcus blamed Victor.

And Victor revealed that several other people had participated.

The investigation expanded.

By the end of the year, thirty-seven people were charged.

The stolen assets began returning.

The Black Crown Trust was restored.

But there was one more secret.

The original beneficiary document contained a third name.

Not mine.

Not Evelyn's.

Another child.

A brother.

We stared at the page.

I looked at my father.

“Where is he?”

My father's face changed.

“He was never taken.”

“Then where?”

May you like

He whispered:

“He was raised under another name.”
