Chapter 14 - OUR FATHER'S FINAL CONFESSIONThe letter was written by our father.

The date was twenty years earlier.

We read it together.

My children,

If you are reading this together, then the plan failed.

I am sorry.

I believed secrecy would protect you.

Instead, secrecy became the weapon used against you.

I separated you because I believed our enemies would destroy all of you if you remained together.

I trusted the wrong people.

I allowed Charles to become involved.

I believed I could control him.

I was wrong.

Evelyn began crying.

The letter continued.

There is another truth.

The Black Crown Trust was never created to make our family rich.

It was created to return money to the people who lost it.

We stared.

Our father had built the entire family empire on restitution.

The stolen fortunes.

The old companies.

The hidden assets.

They had all been intended to eventually return to the victims.

But Charles had turned the trust into a weapon.

He manipulated the family.

He created fake deaths.

He moved children.

He stole assets.

And our father had spent decades trying to contain him.

The final page contained one sentence.

Do not continue the Vance empire.

End it.

I stared at the words.

“What does he mean?”

Samuel opened the financial records.

The answer was there.

The trust controlled more than money.

It controlled companies.

Land.

Patents.

Art.

Private holdings.

Everything.

Our father wanted us to liquidate what could be liquidated.

Return what had been stolen.

Create independent trusts for legitimate beneficiaries.

Then end the family-controlled empire.

Eli looked at me.

“Would you do it?”

I thought about the mansion.

The bandages.

The secrets.

The fear.

“Yes.”

Evelyn nodded.

“So would I.”

Samuel smiled.

“Then we're finally doing something together.”

Lily stood beside us.

“What happens if we close everything?”

I looked at my daughter.

“We build something better.”

The plan began immediately.

Independent trustees.

Public records.

Restitution.

Scholarships.

Hospitals.

Housing.

The family fortune would no longer be controlled by one surname.

But Charles was still missing.

And we knew he would never surrender quietly.

That night, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice said:

“You should not have opened the archive.”

“Charles?”

“You destroyed everything.”

“No.”

“You were supposed to protect the family.”

“We're protecting the truth.”

He laughed.

“You don't know what you've started.”

“We know exactly what we've started.”

“You will regret it.”

“Where are you?”

The line went dead.

Then a message arrived.

A photograph.

Our foundation headquarters.

Taken five minutes earlier.

Someone was watching us.
