Chapter 16 - THE END OF THE EMPIREThe final meeting of the Vance family trust lasted twelve hours.

Lawyers.
Accountants.
Auditors.
Beneficiaries.
Government representatives.
Everyone had a seat.
I stood before them.
“My family spent generations accumulating wealth.”
“We also spent generations hiding how that wealth was created.”
“Today that ends.”
The trust was divided.
Some assets were returned to original families.
Some properties were sold.
Some companies were dissolved.
Some businesses were transferred into independent ownership.
Billions went into a permanent restitution fund.
No Vance family member could control it.
Not me.
Not Evelyn.
Not Samuel.
Not Lily.
Not Eli.
Nobody.
That was important.
Because power should never be allowed to become hereditary control.
Julian stood beside me.
“You're sure?”
“Yes.”
“It's everything your father built.”
“No.”
“It was everything he tried to protect.”
“And now we protect it differently.”
He smiled.
The final company was dissolved six months later.
The Vance name disappeared from the corporate world.
What remained was the foundation.
The trust.
And the people we had helped.
The mansion became a medical research center.
The childhood nursery became a scholarship library.
My old bedroom became a counseling center.
And the mirror remained where it had always been.
I refused to remove it.
Sometimes children visiting the center would stop in front of it.
They would look at themselves.
I would watch them.
And remember the girl I once was.
One day, a little girl asked:
“Why was your face covered?”
I smiled.
“Because someone was afraid of the truth.”
“What truth?”
“That I was beautiful.”
She laughed.
“That is silly.”
“Yes.”
It was.
But it had cost me twenty-six years.
May you like
I wanted other children to understand sooner.
You don't owe the world ugliness just because someone else fears your beauty.
