Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN IN THE SMALL TOWN

The address led to a quiet coastal town three hours away.

A small house stood at the end of a tree-lined street.

No security.

No gates.

No cameras.

Nothing that resembled my life.

A woman opened the door.

She looked to be around twenty-six.

She had my eyes.

I stopped breathing.

She looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered:

“You came.”

My entire body shook.

“Evelyn?”

She nodded.

I walked forward.

“You're my sister.”

“Yes.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I've wanted to meet you for years.”

“Who raised you?”

“A woman named Claire.”

“Did she know who you were?”

“She knew enough.”

“Why didn't you come home?”

Evelyn laughed sadly.

“Home?”

She pointed toward my face.

“I was told your father would kill me if I returned.”

“He was trying to find you.”

“I didn't know.”

“I thought you were dead.”

“So did I.”

Julian stood behind me.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your father.”

Julian nodded.

“Did you know him?”

“He came once.”

“When?”

“Five years ago.”

“What did he say?”

“That I should disappear.”

Julian looked devastated.

Evelyn continued:

“He said your family would destroy each other over the trust.”

“What trust?”

“The Black Crown Trust.”

I had never heard the name.

Evelyn explained that it controlled hidden assets.

Companies.

Land.

Patents.

Art collections.

Private accounts.

Worth billions.

But only direct descendants could access it.

My sister and I were the rightful beneficiaries.

Someone had spent decades trying to remove one of us.

The bandages had protected me.

Evelyn's false identity had protected her.

We had both been hidden.

The difference was that my father had known where she was.

He just hadn't dared bring her home.

Then Evelyn revealed something else.

“Our mother didn't die after giving birth.”

I froze.

“What?”

“She disappeared.”

“Why?”

“She went looking for me.”

“Did she find you?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“She died believing both of us were gone.”

I felt something inside me collapse.

Our mother had spent years searching for us.

And my father had kept the truth buried.

I didn't know whether to forgive him.

Then Evelyn looked at Julian.

“Your father isn't the worst person in this story.”

“Who is?”

“His brother.”

Julian frowned.

“Marcus Hart?”

Evelyn nodded.

“He was the one who arranged the transfer.”

“And the one who took the trust.”

Julian looked at me.

“My family has been stealing yours for generations.”

“We stop it now.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Together?”

I reached for her hand.

“Together.”

For the first time in my life, I had a sister.

And for the first time, the bandages on my face no longer mattered.

May you like

I was no longer hiding.

Neither was she.
