Chapter 18 - THE DAUGHTER WHO NEVER HIDTen years passed.

Lily became a young woman.

She studied medicine.

Evelyn ran the foundation.

Samuel became a respected emergency physician.

Eli continued his environmental work.

I remained involved in the trust.

Julian and I lived quietly.

No security walls.

No private gates.

No secret rooms.

Just a home.

One evening, Lily came to me.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“I want to ask you something.”

“What?”

“Why did Grandpa hide your face?”

I smiled.

“Because he was afraid of what the world might do to me.”

“Did it work?”

“No.”

She looked confused.

“I was safe.”

“But you weren't free.”

I nodded.

“Exactly.”

She sat beside me.

“Would you do anything differently?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“I would tell you the truth sooner.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

She hugged me.

“Because I'm never covering my face.”

I laughed.

“Please don't.”

She grinned.

“I'm serious.”

“I know.”

She looked toward the garden.

“I want to work with the foundation.”

“You don't have to.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because I want other kids to know they don't have to live in fear of being themselves.”

I hugged her.

She had understood the lesson better than I ever had.

May you like

Not inherited.

Learned.
