Chapter 5 - THREE WOMEN, ONE LIE

We returned to the city with Evelyn hidden in one of my family's safe properties.

My father was waiting.

The moment he saw Evelyn, he broke down.

“Evelyn.”

She stood across the room.

“You knew where I was.”

“Yes.”

“And you let me believe you had forgotten me.”

“No.”

“You let me believe my sister had abandoned me.”

“I was trying to keep you both alive.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You succeeded.”

“But at what cost?”

He couldn't answer.

I stood between them.

“For twenty-six years, you decided what we were allowed to know.”

“I know.”

“You called me ugly.”

“I know.”

“You locked me away.”

“I know.”

“You took away my childhood.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

He whispered:

“Because I was terrified.”

Not of us.

Of the people who wanted the trust.

He explained the final secret.

The Black Crown Trust wasn't only money.

It contained evidence.

Evidence that powerful businessmen had illegally taken billions from immigrant families, workers, and smaller companies decades earlier.

My grandfather had discovered the theft.

He created the trust.

He intended to return the assets.

But he died before he could.

Victor Hart discovered the trust.

Marcus Hart controlled the legal system around it.

My father had spent decades trying to protect the evidence.

And me.

The bandages were not a punishment.

They were a disguise.

My face resembled my grandmother.

A woman whose photograph had been circulated by criminals who believed she knew where the trust was hidden.

If they recognized me, they could locate Evelyn.

My father had chosen secrecy.

It saved us.

But it also destroyed our childhood.

That night, I told him:

“I forgive you.”

He looked surprised.

“But I don't excuse you.”

He nodded.

“That is fair.”

Evelyn placed a hand on my shoulder.

“We have work to do.”

The plan was simple.

We would reveal ourselves slowly.

Evelyn would assume a new public identity.

I would appear at major corporate events without my bandages.

Julian would publicly support us.

And the Black Crown Trust would become the centerpiece of an investigation.

The first event was a charity gala hosted by Hart Global.

Marcus would attend.

Victor's former associates would attend.

Every major enemy would be in the same room.

My father looked at me.

“They will recognize you.”

I smiled.

“Good.”

My wedding had once been the moment I removed the bandages.

Now another night would become the moment everyone understood why they had existed.

I chose a red evening gown.

No veil.

No bandages.

No fear.

Evelyn wore black.

Julian stood between us.

When we entered the gala together, conversation stopped.

Marcus looked toward the doors.

His glass slipped from his hand.

He stared at my face.

Then at Evelyn.

His voice became a whisper.

“Impossible.”

May you like

I smiled.

“That's what you said twenty-six years ago.”
