Chapter 2 - Ethan Investigates The Missing Three Thousand Dollars Monthly

The heavy crystal cake stand trembled slightly in Ethan’s grip as the devastating words echoed through the brightly lit open-concept kitchen.

He stared down at Chloe, his exhausted wife, whose messy blonde hair and tear-stained cheeks told a heartbreaking story of systemic abuse.

Eleanor stood a few paces away, her burgundy tailored blazer immaculate as she adjusted her styled silver hair with cold indifference.

“What did you just say, Chloe?” Ethan asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register that made his mother flinch.

“Every single month for the past two years, your mother forced me to hand over the household allowance check,” Chloe sobbed weakly.

“She claimed you instructed her to manage all our savings because I was financially irresponsible and incompetent.”

Ethan’s athletic frame went completely rigid, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edges of the birthday cake box.

He turned his piercing gaze toward Eleanor, whose arrogant facade began to fracture under the weight of his furious glare.

“Is this true, Mother? Did you siphon three thousand dollars a month behind my back?” Ethan demanded, stepping forward.

Eleanor crossed her arms over her chest, lifting her chin with a stubborn, haughty expression of unearned superiority.
