Chapter 9 - The Father's Secret.
Ethan spent the afternoon in his late father’s private archive.
The room had remained locked since Henry Cole died seven years earlier.
Old contracts filled metal cabinets.
Photographs covered the walls.
Ethan had always believed Cole Industries belonged to his family.
His grandfather founded it.
His father expanded it.
Ethan inherited it.
Simple.
Except powerful families were rarely simple.
Daniel helped him review corporate documents dating back thirty years.
Nora stayed with Sophie in a secure apartment arranged by police.
By midnight, Daniel found the first irregularity.
In 1998, Cole Industries faced bankruptcy.
Henry Cole secretly accepted forty million dollars from Malcolm Pierce.
The money saved the company.
In exchange, Malcolm received an option to purchase controlling shares under certain conditions.
The option was never exercised.
But it was never formally canceled either.
Ethan read the contract twice.
“If this is valid, Malcolm can claim control.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not exactly.”
“Why?”
“Because your father later transferred thirty-two percent to Amelia’s grandfather.”
“Why?”
“To dilute Malcolm’s option.”
Ethan finally understood.
Henry had saved the company using Malcolm’s money.
Then he had quietly protected it by transferring shares to a trusted family friend.
Those shares eventually passed to Amelia.
Then Sophie.
Malcolm believed the company had been stolen from him.
“So this started before Amelia and I even met.”
“Long before.”
Daniel discovered more.
Malcolm funded Richard Vale’s career because Richard specialized in hiding beneficial ownership.
Thomas Grant later joined Malcolm’s network through private security contracts.
Celeste helped manage investors after Vale Capital expanded.
All of them were pieces of a structure Malcolm had built over decades.
Amelia became involved accidentally.
She inherited the shares Malcolm needed.
Then she married Ethan.
That united the two blocks of stock Malcolm could never defeat.
“He must have hated our marriage.”
Daniel looked at him.
“He probably feared it.”
Ethan remembered Malcolm giving a speech at their wedding.
He had toasted their future.
He had called Amelia the perfect addition to the family.
Now every word felt poisonous.
At one in the morning, Nora called.
Sophie could not sleep.
Ethan spoke with her by video.
“I want to come home.”
“I know.”
“Is Celeste there?”
“No.”
“Is Mr. Richard?”
“No.”
“Mr. Thomas?”
“No.”
Sophie thought for a moment.
“Then why can’t we go?”
Ethan had no answer a six-year-old should have to understand.
“Because I need to make sure nobody can scare you again.”
Sophie looked down.
“Mommy said brave doesn’t mean not scared.”
Ethan smiled sadly.
“She was right.”
“It means you do the next thing anyway.”
Those had been Amelia’s words.
Ethan felt tears threaten.
“What’s the next thing, Dad?”
The question stayed with him after the call ended.
At two thirty, he opened Amelia’s video folder again.
One file had not played properly earlier.
It was corrupted.
Daniel examined it.
“There’s another file embedded inside.”
After twenty minutes, he recovered part of it.
The video showed Amelia sitting across from Ethan’s father.
Henry Cole.
The date indicated it had been recorded eight years earlier.
Months before Henry died.
Henry looked ill.
“I should have told Ethan.”
Amelia answered.
“He’ll forgive you.”
“No.”
Henry shook his head.
“He’ll understand me.”
“That’s worse.”
Ethan leaned toward the screen.
Henry continued.
“Malcolm believes I cheated him.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
Ethan’s stomach tightened.
Henry looked directly toward the hidden camera.
“I forged Malcolm’s signature on the release.”
Daniel froze the video.
“What release?”
They searched the archive.
Three hours later, Ethan found it.
A legal document dated 2001.
It appeared to show Malcolm surrendering his purchase option.
The signature looked genuine.
According to Henry’s video, it was not.
Ethan felt sick.
His father had committed fraud.
Malcolm’s anger was not entirely invented.
But neither did it justify what he had done.
Daniel kept watching the recovered file.
Henry explained that Malcolm had threatened to dismantle the company and sell thousands of jobs if he ever took control.
Henry forged the release to stop him.
Then Henry transferred shares to Amelia’s family to create another defense.
Amelia had inherited a war she never started.
Ethan had inherited the lie.
Sophie had inherited the consequences.
The recording suddenly distorted.
Then one final clear sentence emerged.
Henry said, “There is only one original copy of Malcolm’s real option agreement.”
Amelia asked, “Where is it?”
Henry answered.
“I gave it to the only person Malcolm would never suspect.”
The video ended.
Ethan stared at the screen.
Daniel frowned.
“Who?”
Then Ethan remembered something his father had said repeatedly when Sophie was born.
If anything happens to me, the safest place in this family will always be the child.
