Chapter 14 - What Was in the Juice.

Ethan remembered Sophie’s words.
She had been awake inside the suitcase.
Breathing normally.
Physically unharmed.
But Richard had just said she was not supposed to wake up before the flight.
Ethan called the hospital.
Sophie was examined immediately.
Blood tests found nothing because too much time had passed.
Then Sophie remembered something.
“Celeste gave me apple juice.”
“When?”
“Before she packed.”
“Did it taste funny?”
“A little.”
Ethan felt rage rise through him.
Celeste was brought back for questioning.
She denied drugging Sophie.
This time Ethan believed her fear.
“Richard made the juice.”
Her face turned white.
“I thought he was helping pack her snack.”
“What was in it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Think.”
Celeste began shaking.
“He had pills.”
“What pills?”
“I don’t know.”
She covered her face.
“Oh, God.”
The plan had been worse than anyone realized.
Celeste intended to take Sophie through private aviation channels.
Richard planned to sedate her so she would not protest.
When Sophie drank only a small amount, the medication did not fully affect her.
She became sleepy.
She wandered upstairs.
She caught Richard and Celeste together in Amelia’s bedroom.
Celeste panicked and locked her inside the suitcase.
Then Ethan came home early.
Every coincidence that saved Sophie now felt horrifyingly narrow.
The private aviation company confirmed the reservation.
Their flight was scheduled from Westchester County Airport to Lisbon with a fuel stop in the Azores.
Richard had arranged documentation describing Sophie as medically anxious and likely to sleep during travel.
Ethan sat silently after reading it.
They had planned everything.
Sophie sleeping.
Celeste posing as mother.
Richard traveling as family counsel.
A forged Portuguese guardianship petition waiting overseas.
Once established abroad, they would invoke the trust clause before Ethan could stop them.
Then Sophie would become leverage.
Ethan stopped imagining what might have happened after that.
He focused on what he could still control.
Protect Sophie.
Expose Malcolm.
Find Richard.
Federal agents traced Richard’s church-bell call.
Cell tower records narrowed his location to several blocks near St. Matthew’s.
Surveillance cameras eventually captured a man entering an abandoned apartment building.
Agents moved in.
The apartment was empty.
Richard had left behind clothes.
Cash.
Several passports.
And photographs.
One image showed Amelia at the hospital.
Another showed Malcolm entering Vale Capital years earlier.
Then investigators found a notebook.
Richard had kept records of everyone he believed owed him money.
Malcolm appeared throughout.
So did Celeste.
So did Judge Kessler.
Near the final pages was a list titled LEVERAGE.
Daniel Hayes.
Amelia Cole.
Thomas Grant.
Jonathan Pierce.
Sophie Cole.
Ethan stared at Jonathan’s name.
Malcolm’s son had been leverage against his own father.
Why?
Agents located Jonathan two days later in a rehabilitation clinic in Vermont.
He had checked himself in under another name.
Jonathan agreed to speak only if Malcolm was not told.
Ethan traveled there with investigators.
Jonathan looked exhausted.
“My father used everyone.”
“Including you?”
“Especially me.”
Jonathan explained that Malcolm had forced him to move foundation money through fake grants.
When Jonathan threatened to expose him, Malcolm reminded him that Jonathan had signed several fraudulent documents.
“If he went down, I went down.”
Ethan understood the pattern.
Malcolm never simply recruited people.
He compromised them.
Then he owned them.
“Why were you at my house?”
“Celeste called me.”
“Why?”
“She wanted help.”
“With Sophie?”
“No.”
Jonathan shook his head.
“She wanted to escape Richard.”
Ethan frowned.
“She told me Richard was getting dangerous.”
“Then why didn’t you contact police?”
“Because I was afraid of my father.”
Jonathan looked ashamed.
“I told her I could get passports.”
“You helped her.”
“I thought she was running from Richard.”
“With my daughter.”
“I didn’t know Sophie was part of it until I arrived.”
“What happened?”
“I heard Richard yelling upstairs.”
“What did he say?”
Jonathan looked toward the investigators.
“He told Celeste that after they reached Portugal, Sophie would become unnecessary.”
The room went silent.
Ethan’s face emptied of emotion.
“What exactly did he mean?”
“I don’t know.”
“Guess.”
Jonathan swallowed.
“I think he planned to get guardianship control.”
May you like
“And then?”
“He wasn’t planning to bring Sophie home.”
