Chapter 17 - The Letter to Sophie.

Ethan arrived at the safe house in record time.
Federal agents had already identified the woman who delivered the book.
She was a courier.
She had received the package from a drop box.
No direct contact with Richard.
Sophie was unharmed.
The book belonged to Amelia.
A collection of children’s stories she used to read at bedtime.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Investigators confirmed Amelia’s handwriting.
The message had been written years earlier.
Dear Sophie, if you are old enough to read this alone, then I hope none of these secrets ever mattered.
But if your father found the Greenwich house, then Richard may still be searching for what I hid.
Ethan read the next line.
There is one copy he can never destroy.
It is inside the place where your father first told me he loved me.
Ethan immediately knew.
The old observatory.
He and Amelia met at Yale.
During their final year, Ethan took her to a small university observatory after midnight.
Beneath the closed dome, he told her he loved her.
Years later, they donated money to restore the building.
Amelia never forgot it.
Neither did Ethan.
Federal agents secured the observatory before anyone entered.
A search found nothing immediately.
Then Ethan remembered where Amelia had been standing that night.
Beside the brass telescope pedestal.
A maintenance panel at its base opened with four screws.
Inside was a waterproof envelope.
The final copy.
Not microfilm.
Not financial records.
A signed confession.
From Richard Vale.
Daniel stared at the signature.
“How did she get this?”
The document was dated one month before Amelia died.
Richard admitted participating in the Vale Capital fraud.
He admitted moving money for Malcolm.
He admitted using Thomas Grant to obtain household information.
He admitted planning to manipulate Sophie’s trust.
And he admitted entering Amelia’s hospital room.
Ethan’s hands shook as he read that section.
Richard claimed Malcolm ordered him to retrieve documents from Amelia.
He admitted placing crushed sedatives into her drink to make her easier to intimidate.
He insisted he had not intended to kill her.
His confession was enough to transform the case.
But the final page contained a handwritten note.
This confession becomes public if Sophie is ever threatened.
Amelia had forced Richard to sign it as insurance.
She must have believed it would protect their daughter.
For three years, it did.
Then Richard discovered Amelia had hidden more copies.
That was why he returned.
Not simply for the trust.
Not simply for Malcolm.
He wanted to erase the confession that could imprison him.
Investigators circulated the document.
Hours later, they received another break.
Richard contacted Malcolm’s attorney using an encrypted messaging service.
He wanted money.
Ten million dollars.
In exchange, Richard promised to disappear permanently and destroy evidence that could worsen Malcolm’s charges.
Malcolm’s attorney reported the contact.
The government arranged a sting.
Richard demanded the payment be delivered to a storage facility near Stamford.
This time, nobody underestimated him.
Agents surrounded the area discreetly.
A vehicle arrived after midnight.
Richard stepped out.
Alive.
Uninjured.
He opened the storage unit.
Inside sat a case containing fake currency and a tracking device.
Richard realized the trap almost instantly.
He ran.
Agents closed every exit.
Richard climbed a stairwell toward the roof.
Ethan watched the operation remotely from a command van.
He should not have been there.
He knew that.
But after everything, he needed to see it end.
Richard reached the roof.
Agents followed.
There was nowhere left to go.
A helicopter illuminated him.
Richard stood near the edge.
“Hands where we can see them.”
For several seconds, he stared into the light.
Then he laughed.
“You think Malcolm is the reason any of this happened?”
Agents ordered him down.
Richard shouted.
“Ask Ethan why Amelia chose him.”
Ethan heard it through the radio.
His stomach tightened.
Richard continued.
“Ask him who introduced them.”
Then agents moved.
Richard resisted.
They pulled him safely away from the edge and placed him in handcuffs.
He was finally captured.
As officers led him downstairs, Richard saw Ethan beside the command vehicle.
He smiled.
“Did Amelia never tell you?”
Ethan stepped closer.
“Tell me what?”
May you like
Richard’s smile widened.
“She didn’t meet you by accident.”
