Chapter 1 - The Message on the Photograph.

Ethan stared at the back of the photograph until the room seemed to disappear around him.

The handwriting belonged to Amelia.

He would have recognized those careful blue letters anywhere.

His late wife had written only four lines.

Ethan, if anyone ever tries to take Sophie out of the country, do not let her cross the border.

Look beneath the blue star in her old nursery.

Trust Nora Hayes.

And whatever happens, never trust Richard Mercer.

Ethan stopped breathing.

Behind him, something struck the marble floor.

One of the airline tickets had slipped from Celeste’s trembling hand.

Richard remained halfway down the staircase with his shirt unbuttoned, staring at the photograph as though he had just seen a ghost.

Sophie tightened both arms around Ethan’s neck.

“Daddy, that’s him.”

Her small finger pointed toward Richard.

“He was in Mommy’s room.”

Richard’s expression changed immediately.

“This is ridiculous.”

Celeste descended another step.

“Ethan, please listen before you start imagining things.”

Ethan slowly turned toward her.

His face had become frighteningly calm.

“You locked my six-year-old daughter inside a suitcase.”

“I did not.”

Sophie flinched.

Celeste saw it.

So did Ethan.

Celeste’s voice softened.

“She climbed inside while playing.”

“No.”

Sophie’s whisper was almost too quiet to hear.

“She put me there.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Sophie is confused.”

Ethan’s eyes snapped toward him.

“Do not say her name.”

Richard froze.

For the first time since Ethan had known him, the polished confidence disappeared.

Ethan placed Sophie gently on the sofa and knelt beside her.

“Did Celeste hurt you?”

Sophie shook her head.

“No.”

“Did she tell you why she locked you inside?”

“She said I ruin everything.”

Celeste closed her eyes.

Sophie continued.

“She said we had to leave before you came home.”

Ethan picked up the ticket from the floor.

The destination was Lisbon.

The departure time was 9:40 that evening.

There were three names printed on the itinerary.

Celeste Bennett.

Sophie Cole.

Richard Mercer.

Ethan looked at Richard.

“You were traveling with them.”

Richard buttoned his shirt.

“It was a misunderstanding.”

“A misunderstanding with three international tickets?”

Celeste hurried across the room.

“Ethan, I was taking Sophie on vacation.”

“Without telling me?”

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

Celeste hesitated.

That hesitation told him everything.

Ethan pulled out his phone.

Richard moved instantly.

“Think carefully before you call anyone.”

Ethan looked up.

“Was that a threat?”

Richard forced a smile.

“It was advice.”

Ethan dialed 911.

Celeste’s face drained of color.

Richard started toward the side hallway.

“Stay where you are.”

Ethan’s voice stopped him.

Richard looked back.

“You don’t control me.”

“No.”

Ethan glanced toward the security camera above the foyer.

“But I own this house.”

Richard gave him an unreadable look.

Then Ethan noticed something strange.

The red light beneath the camera was dark.

The security system was off.

Ethan looked toward the control panel.

Its wires had been pulled loose.

Celeste followed his gaze.

“That wasn’t me.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“Then who?”

Nobody answered.

Sirens became faintly audible outside the mansion gates.

Sophie tugged Ethan’s sleeve.

“Daddy?”

He turned immediately.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

She held the photograph against her chest.

“When Celeste put me in the suitcase, she asked where Mommy hid the little silver key.”

Celeste went completely still.

Ethan felt cold spread through him.

“What silver key?”

Sophie pointed upstairs.

“The one Mommy told me never to give anybody.”

Richard suddenly ran.

He crossed the foyer toward the rear doors.

Ethan shouted after him.

Richard slammed through the doorway just as police lights flooded the windows.

Celeste stood frozen beside the staircase.

May you like

And Sophie whispered one final sentence.

“He knows where the blue star is.”
