Chapter 8 - The Heir Behind the Heir.

Malcolm Pierce’s son was named Jonathan.
Publicly, Jonathan had almost no role in Cole Industries.
He ran a charitable foundation in Boston.
He rarely attended board meetings.
He avoided photographs.
That invisibility suddenly seemed deliberate.
Sophie remembered him clearly.
“He came through the kitchen.”
“What did he say to Celeste?”
“I was upstairs.”
“Did you hear anything?”
“She told him Daddy was coming home early.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
That meant Celeste knew Ethan would find Sophie.
Unless locking Sophie inside the suitcase had not been part of the original plan.
Maybe something had gone wrong.
Ethan showed Sophie photographs of Jonathan.
She chose him immediately.
“That’s the man.”
Detectives contacted Boston authorities.
Jonathan was not at home.
His foundation office was empty.
His phone was off.
Malcolm Pierce finally returned Ethan’s calls that afternoon.
His voice sounded almost offended.
“You believe I’m involved in this?”
“Your son was inside my house yesterday.”
“According to a six-year-old child.”
“My six-year-old child.”
“Ethan, be reasonable.”
Ethan nearly laughed.
“A woman locked Sophie inside a suitcase and planned to take her to Portugal.”
“That is horrifying.”
“She was working with Richard Vale.”
Silence.
Ethan continued.
“You remember Richard.”
“I’ve met thousands of people.”
“You funded his scholarship.”
Another silence.
This one was longer.
“Those programs helped hundreds of students.”
“You threatened Amelia.”
“That is absurd.”
“I have the recording.”
Malcolm’s breathing changed.
Only slightly.
But Ethan heard it.
“What do you want?”
“I want the truth.”
“The truth is expensive.”
“So is prison.”
Malcolm chuckled softly.
“You always did sound more like your father when you were angry.”
“Stay away from my daughter.”
Ethan ended the call.
That night, the Cole Industries board scheduled an emergency meeting.
Malcolm had called it.
The agenda contained one item.
Temporary removal of Ethan Cole as chief executive due to personal instability and ongoing criminal investigations involving his household.
The move was brilliant.
Malcolm was turning the scandal against him.
News outlets had already gathered outside the mansion.
Anonymous sources claimed Ethan had endangered Sophie through negligence.
Stories appeared describing Celeste as a concerned stepmother trying to remove Sophie from an unsafe home.
One article suggested Ethan had fabricated the suitcase story during a domestic dispute.
Celeste had vanished.
Richard had vanished.
Thomas had vanished.
And somehow Ethan was becoming the suspect in the court of public opinion.
His attorney advised him to remain silent.
Ethan refused to surrender control of his company.
The next morning, he entered the boardroom carrying Amelia’s trust amendment.
Malcolm sat at the opposite end of the table.
He looked composed.
Almost paternal.
“I’m sorry it came to this.”
“No, you’re not.”
Malcolm folded his hands.
“You need time with your daughter.”
“I agree.”
“Then step aside.”
“No.”
Several directors shifted uncomfortably.
Malcolm continued.
“This company cannot survive a chief executive surrounded by scandal.”
Ethan placed Amelia’s amendment on the table.
“Then perhaps everyone should know what this scandal is actually about.”
Malcolm’s eyes dropped toward the document.
For the first time, his composure broke.
Only for a second.
But Ethan saw it.
“This amendment confirms Sophie’s voting trust.”
A director leaned forward.
“What voting trust?”
Ethan explained.
Whispers spread around the room.
Malcolm interrupted.
“That document was never filed.”
“It was notarized.”
“It expired.”
“My attorneys disagree.”
Malcolm smiled.
“Then litigate it.”
Ethan did not move.
“I will.”
The vote to suspend him began.
Malcolm had clearly prepared the board.
One director supported Ethan.
Then two.
Then three.
But Malcolm controlled more.
The final vote was nine to seven.
Ethan was temporarily removed.
Malcolm Pierce became acting chief executive.
As Ethan gathered his papers, Malcolm approached.
“You should have stayed home.”
Ethan looked at him.
“You should have stayed away from my family.”
Malcolm’s smile disappeared.
“You still don’t understand.”
“What?”
“This was never Richard’s plan.”
Ethan waited.
Malcolm leaned closer.
“Richard was only supposed to scare Amelia.”
Ethan’s blood turned cold.
“Scare her into what?”
“Giving me what belonged to me.”
“What belonged to you?”
Malcolm stepped back.
“The company.”
Ethan stared at him.
Then Malcolm delivered the sentence that changed everything.
“Ask yourself why your father really left Cole Industries to you.”
Ethan frowned.
May you like
Malcolm smiled again.
“Then ask whether he had the legal right.”
