Amelia rarely spoke about her mother.

Inside were letters between Amelia and her mother.

Malcolm had helped Amelia’s mother invest her inheritance.

Malcolm claimed Henry cheated him.

Amelia had discovered the full pattern.

If Sophie ever inherits this fight, end it.

Ethan closed his eyes.
For weeks, he had been fighting to preserve Cole Industries.
Amelia was telling him the company was not the thing that mattered.
Sophie was.
Then Daniel called from downstairs.
“Ethan.”
They had found a hidden recording system.
One audio file was dated ten days before Amelia died.
Amelia’s voice came first.
“You’re late.”
Then Richard answered.
“You shouldn’t have contacted Daniel.”
Ethan froze.
The recording continued.
Amelia said she had copies of everything.
Richard threatened her.
Then another voice entered.
Celeste.
Ethan looked toward the investigators.
Celeste had claimed she only met Amelia briefly.
The recording proved otherwise.
Amelia said, “If you help him take Sophie, you will become exactly what he is.”
Celeste replied, “I don’t want Sophie.”
Richard laughed.
“You want Ethan.”
Celeste said nothing.
Richard continued.
“You want the house.”
“The money.”
“The name.”
Amelia’s voice became quiet.
“Then take all of it.”
“But leave my daughter alone.”
Ethan’s throat tightened.
Even dying, Amelia had tried bargaining with them.
Then Celeste spoke.
“I won’t hurt her.”
The recording ended.
Three years later, she locked Sophie in a suitcase.
Ethan realized Celeste had not entered his life after Amelia’s death by coincidence.
Amelia had known exactly who she was.
She had even predicted what Celeste wanted.
Yet Amelia never told Ethan directly.

Another letter answered that.
Richard monitors my calls.
Thomas monitors the house.
Malcolm monitors Ethan’s office.
If I accuse Celeste before I have proof, she disappears and Richard changes the plan.
I need them to believe I know less than I do.
Ethan sat down.
Amelia had been playing a dangerous game alone.
Then an agent entered.
“We found fingerprints.”
“Whose?”
“Richard’s.”
“Here?”
“Recent.”
“How recent?”
“Probably within the last forty-eight hours.”
Ethan looked around.
Richard had survived the harbor.
He had been inside Amelia’s hidden house.
The package had been sent deliberately.
Richard wanted Ethan to find this place.
The question was why.
Then Sophie called from the safe house.
Her voice sounded excited.
“Daddy, a lady brought me Mommy’s old book.”
Ethan stood instantly.
“What lady?”
“I don’t know.”
His heart stopped.
“Where is Nora?”
“In the kitchen.”
“Sophie, listen to me.”
He heard pages turning.
“There’s a letter inside.”
“Sophie, do not touch anything.”
But she had already opened it.
