Chapter 10 - The Dollhouse.

Sophie owned a wooden dollhouse built by Henry Cole himself.

He had given it to her on her first birthday.

It stood in storage after she outgrew it.

Ethan ordered security to bring it to the apartment.

Sophie watched curiously while he examined every wall.

“Grandpa made that.”

“I remember.”

“He said the little house had secrets.”

Ethan stopped.

“What secrets?”

Sophie shrugged.

“He said every good house does.”

The dollhouse contained six rooms.

Tiny furniture.

Miniature lamps.

A staircase.

Nothing appeared unusual.

Then Sophie reached inside.

“You have to push the fireplace.”

Ethan looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Grandpa showed me.”

She pressed the miniature stone fireplace.

A section of the dollhouse floor clicked open.

Inside was a rolled document sealed inside plastic.

Ethan unfolded it carefully.

The original Pierce option agreement.

Malcolm’s actual signature appeared at the bottom.

The agreement contained a clause missing from every copy in Cole Industries files.

Malcolm’s option expired automatically if he engaged in criminal conduct affecting company assets.

Daniel read it twice.

“If we prove the Vale Capital fraud involved Cole money, Malcolm loses every claim.”

Ethan almost laughed from relief.

But Daniel kept reading.

“There’s another problem.”

“What?”

“The clause requires a final criminal judgment.”

“A conviction.”

“Yes.”

That could take years.

Malcolm remained powerful today.

Sophie pointed toward the plastic sleeve.

“There’s something else.”

A small note was folded beneath the agreement.

Henry’s handwriting appeared across it.

Ethan, if you are reading this, then my shortcuts finally became your burden.

Do not repeat my mistake.

I tried to save this company by hiding the truth.

Save your daughter by exposing it.

Ethan sat silently.

His father had spent a lifetime teaching him to protect the family name.

Now his final message told Ethan to destroy the lie beneath it.

The next morning, Ethan held a press conference.

His attorneys strongly advised against it.

He did it anyway.

Cameras filled the courthouse steps.

Ethan admitted publicly that his father had forged Malcolm Pierce’s signature on a corporate release.

Reporters erupted.

He continued.

He revealed the original agreement.

He described the hidden trust.

He confirmed that law enforcement was investigating Richard Vale.

He did not mention Daniel’s location.

He did not accuse Malcolm of crimes not yet proven.

He simply told the truth.

By noon, Cole Industries stock plunged.

Commentators called Ethan reckless.

Several board members demanded his permanent resignation.

Malcolm appeared on television.

His performance was flawless.

“I am deeply saddened to learn the truth about my old friend Henry.”

He portrayed himself as the betrayed investor.

He promised to stabilize the company.

Then he announced he would petition the court to enforce his original purchase option.

Ethan had expected that.

What he had not expected came two hours later.

Celeste walked into a Hartford police station.

She surrendered voluntarily.

Her attorney contacted Ethan’s lawyer.

Celeste wanted immunity.

In exchange, she would testify against Richard and Malcolm.

Ethan refused to meet her.

Then Celeste sent a message.

Ask Ethan whether he wants to know what happened the night Amelia recorded Malcolm.

Ethan changed his mind.

They met inside an interview room.

Celeste looked nothing like the woman who had descended the mansion staircase.

No makeup.

No designer clothing.

No arrogance.

“You locked Sophie in a suitcase.”

Celeste lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she saw Richard and me packing Amelia’s papers.”

“You could have walked away.”

“I know.”

“You could have called me.”

“I know.”

“You chose her.”

Celeste began crying.

“I chose myself.”

Ethan felt no sympathy.

“What happened the night Amelia recorded Malcolm?”

Celeste wiped her face.

“I was there.”

Ethan went still.

“She confronted him about the trust.”

“Then what?”

“Malcolm told Richard to frighten her.”

“How?”

Celeste hesitated.

“By making her believe Sophie could disappear.”

Ethan’s hands curled into fists.

“They threatened to abduct my daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Did Richard hurt Amelia?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you scared?”

Celeste looked toward the mirrored observation window.

“Because Malcolm didn’t know Richard had another plan.”

“What plan?”

Celeste leaned forward.

“Richard wanted Amelia’s trust for himself.”

“And?”

“He made a copy of everything Malcolm gave him.”

“Where?”

Celeste swallowed.

“In the music box.”

Ethan stared at her.

“Richard has it now.”

“No.”

Celeste shook her head.

“He thinks he does.”

“What does that mean?”

“The music box he stole from Nora was empty.”

Ethan’s heart began pounding.

“Where is the real microfilm?”

May you like

Celeste looked directly into his eyes.

“I gave it to Sophie three years ago.”
