Chapter 2 - The Blue Star.

Police officers entered the mansion while Ethan kept Sophie wrapped inside his coat.

Celeste immediately began crying.

Her tears came quickly and beautifully.

She told the officers Sophie had crawled into the suitcase during a game.

She claimed the lock had accidentally snapped shut.

She insisted the airline tickets were for a surprise vacation Ethan had misunderstood.

Ethan said almost nothing.

He simply handed the officers Amelia’s photograph.

Then he showed them the broken security panel.

One officer examined the suitcase.

The lock was on the outside.

There was no mechanism inside Sophie could have activated.

Celeste’s story began collapsing within minutes.

Still, the police could not immediately prove who had locked it.

Richard was gone.

The mansion grounds were searched.

His car remained in the driveway.

His phone had been abandoned in the guest bathroom.

Somehow, he had vanished on foot.

Ethan carried Sophie upstairs once police permitted them to move.

Her old nursery had been untouched since she turned four.

Amelia had decorated it before Sophie was born.

Soft cream walls surrounded a painted nighttime sky.

Tiny silver stars curved across the ceiling.

A blue wooden star hung above the old bookshelf.

Ethan had seen it a thousand times.

He had never wondered why it was the only blue one.

Sophie pointed.

“That one.”

Ethan pulled a chair beneath it.

He lifted the wooden decoration.

It came away from the wall easily.

Behind it was a shallow compartment.

Inside lay a silver key.

There was also a folded envelope.

Ethan’s name was written across the front.

His fingers trembled as he opened it.

Amelia’s letter was dated three weeks before her death.

My love, if you are reading this, then something I feared has happened.

Celeste knows more about our family than you think.

Richard Mercer is helping her.

He is not a business consultant.

His real name is Richard Vale.

Ethan lowered the letter.

He knew that surname.

Vale Capital had collapsed eleven years earlier after investors lost nearly eighty million dollars.

The founder disappeared before federal charges could be filed.

Richard Vale.

Ethan looked toward Sophie.

She was sitting quietly on the bed.

“Daddy?”

“I’m okay.”

He continued reading.

Richard approached me six months ago.

He told me certain shares in Cole Industries were never legally yours.

They belonged to my family trust.

When I die, those shares pass directly to Sophie.

Ethan stared at the page.

His company.

His entire company.

Amelia had inherited a silent ownership position from her grandfather decades earlier.

Those shares had never appeared in Ethan’s personal holdings because they had remained inside a private family trust.

According to Amelia, the trust controlled thirty-two percent of Cole Industries.

Enough to decide almost every major corporate vote.

Enough to make Sophie one of the wealthiest children in Connecticut.

Ethan felt sick.

The letter continued.

Richard somehow discovered the trust.

He also discovered a dormant clause allowing Sophie’s legal guardian to exercise voting authority if Sophie established permanent residence in certain European jurisdictions.

I have begun changing the documents.

But I am afraid I may not finish.

Celeste has been asking questions about Sophie’s passport.

Ethan’s head snapped up.

The Lisbon ticket.

The hidden trip.

The locked suitcase.

Everything suddenly connected.

Celeste had not been planning a vacation.

She had been planning to move Sophie.

The final lines were worse.

The silver key opens a box at First Hartford Private Bank.

Nora knows the number.

Do not tell anyone until you speak to her.

Especially not Richard.

Ethan folded the letter.

A police officer appeared in the doorway.

“Mr. Cole?”

“Yes?”

“We found something in Mr. Mercer’s room.”

Ethan followed him down the hall.

Inside the guest room, an officer stood beside an open leather bag.

There were photographs inside.

Photographs of Ethan.

Photographs of Sophie leaving school.

Photographs of Amelia entering hospitals during the final year of her life.

There were copies of Sophie’s birth certificate.

Copies of Amelia’s death certificate.

And beneath them was a partially completed Portuguese guardianship petition.

Celeste Bennett was listed as Sophie’s mother.

Ethan stared at the forged document.

Then the officer lifted one final item.

A second passport.

It had Sophie’s photograph.

May you like

But the surname printed beneath it was not Cole.

It was Vale.
