Chapter 4 - The Man Outside the Window.

The cottage suddenly felt much smaller.

Ethan moved Sophie away from the windows.

Nora locked the back door.

Outside, detectives spread across the property.

For fifteen minutes, nothing happened.

Then one officer discovered footprints near the water.

They led toward the cottage.

They stopped beneath Nora’s bedroom window.

Richard had been there.

Watching.

The realization made Ethan furious.

He wanted to search the shoreline himself.

The detectives refused.

“You have a child with you.”

“That man tried to take my daughter out of the country.”

“And we intend to find him.”

Sophie gripped Ethan’s hand.

“Daddy, don’t go.”

He immediately stopped arguing.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

By noon, police escorted them back to Hartford.

Nora came with them.

The silver key remained hidden inside Ethan’s jacket.

First Hartford Private Bank occupied an old stone building downtown.

Amelia’s account had not been accessed in nearly three years.

A manager confirmed that the key matched box 417.

Before opening it, Ethan called his attorney.

He also asked detectives to remain present.

The manager led them into a secure room.

Box 417 was surprisingly small.

Inside were three things.

A black flash drive.

A handwritten journal.

And a sealed legal envelope addressed to Sophie.

Ethan opened the journal first.

Amelia’s writing filled the pages.

She had documented every suspicious payment she discovered.

Every meeting.

Every conversation.

Every name.

Celeste appeared repeatedly.

So did Richard.

But halfway through the journal, Ethan found something unexpected.

His own name.

March 4.

Ethan still believes the acquisition problems are ordinary accounting errors.

I cannot tell him yet.

He trusts his executives too much.

Ethan turned the page.

March 21.

Richard contacted me again.

He knows about Sophie’s trust.

He says he can make the voting rights disappear unless I cooperate.

He wants control of Cole Industries through Sophie.

Ethan clenched his jaw.

Nora read over his shoulder.

“Keep going.”

April 2.

Celeste was at the hospital today.

She pretended we had never met.

I recognized her immediately from Vale Capital’s investor records.

She handled communications for Richard during the collapse.

Ethan looked at Nora.

“Celeste met Amelia?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“Because Celeste lied.”

Amelia’s entries became shorter as her illness worsened.

Then came the final page.

I have changed the trust.

The old foreign residency clause will expire permanently if Ethan files the enclosed amendment after my death.

I cannot file it myself because Richard has placed someone inside the firm handling the trust.

Ethan’s pulse accelerated.

“What amendment?”

Nora opened the legal envelope.

Inside was a notarized document.

It removed the clause allowing an overseas guardian to control Sophie’s voting rights.

It also named Ethan sole guardian of the trust until Sophie turned twenty-five.

Ethan stared at the filing instructions.

The amendment had never been submitted.

Three years had passed.

“Can it still be filed?”

His attorney examined the document.

“If Amelia executed it properly, possibly.”

“Possibly?”

“There may be litigation.”

“How long?”

“Months.”

Ethan looked toward Sophie.

Richard and Celeste had nearly stolen control of a fortune because Ethan had never known this paper existed.

Then the attorney pointed toward the flash drive.

“We should see what’s on that.”

The bank provided a secure computer.

Ethan inserted the drive.

There were fourteen video files.

Twelve audio recordings.

And one folder labeled IF THEY TAKE SOPHIE.

He opened it.

A video appeared.

Amelia sat in her bedroom.

She was thin from treatment.

But her eyes were fierce.

“Ethan, if you are seeing this, Celeste and Richard have made their move.”

Ethan’s throat tightened.

Sophie stepped closer to the screen.

“Mommy.”

Amelia continued.

“I need you to understand something before you blame yourself.”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“You were not the target at first.”

He frowned.

Amelia looked directly into the camera.

“Sophie was.”

Then someone knocked loudly on the bank security room door.

A guard entered.

“Mr. Cole, we have a problem.”

“What?”

“A man tried to access box 417 this morning.”

Ethan slowly stood.

“Who?”

The guard placed a photocopy of an identification card on the table.

The face belonged to Richard.

But the name beneath it was different.

Daniel Hayes.

Nora stared at the card.

Her entire body stiffened.

Ethan noticed.

“You know that name.”

Nora could barely speak.

“Yes.”

“Who is Daniel Hayes?”

May you like

Her eyes filled with fear.

“My son.”
