Chapter 3 - The Safe House in Brooklyn

By 1:00 AM, the penthouse was cleared of glass, blood, and sauce.

Nina sat on an oversized velvet armchair in the private study, wrapped in an expensive cashmere blanket, holding a steaming mug of black tea. Ghost lay stretched out across her feet, his heavy head resting over her ankles, exactly the way he had slept as a twenty-pound pup in Queens.

Lorenzo sat behind a massive dark oak desk, reviewing a stack of red-tabbed dossiers brought in by his intelligence team.

"Your father’s shop was burned down three weeks after Ghost went missing," Lorenzo said, looking up from the file.

Nina’s fingers tightened around the porcelain mug. "Arson. The police said it was an electrical fire, but we knew better. Someone wanted the property. My dad couldn't afford to rebuild. He had a stroke eight months later and passed away."

Lorenzo stared at her for a long moment, the amber in his eyes darkening.

"Dominic Moretti didn't just run logistics for me, Nina," Lorenzo revealed quietly. "He ran private real estate acquisitions on the side. He was buying up commercial parcels along the Astoria waterfront for an illegal casino development syndicate headed by the Moretti family."

Nina felt the air leave her lungs in a sharp gasp. "They burned our shop for the land?"

"Yes," Lorenzo said. "And when Dominic saw Ghost guarding the garage during their initial scouting, he stole the dog to use as a trained bodyguard for my detail, knowing I was looking for an attack dog after the hit on my father."

Ghost stirred at the sound of Lorenzo’s voice, letting out a soft, questioning whine.

Lorenzo looked down at the dog. For the first time, his cold, aristocratic mask slipped, revealing a deep, unhealed scar of grief.

"This dog saved my life when three shooters ambushed my car in Miami two years ago," Lorenzo said softly. "He took two rounds to the shoulder and still dragged me out of the line of fire. I thought he was loyal to my money and my commands. But tonight, I saw what true loyalty looks like."

Lorenzo stood up, walked around the desk, and stopped in front of Nina.

"You have two choices, Nina Vasquez," Lorenzo said. "You can take fifty thousand dollars, walk out the front door tonight, and I keep the dog. Or you stay under my protection while I tear down the syndicate that killed your father, and when this is over, Ghost goes home with you."

Nina looked down at the scarred muzzle resting against her boots. She felt the dog's steady, rhythmic heartbeat beneath her toes.

She looked up into Lorenzo’s amber eyes.

"I’m staying," Nina said. "And we’re taking back everything they stole."
