Chapter 17 - The Cornerstone of Astoria

The morning of the cornerstone laying ceremony in Astoria, Queens, dawned bright, crisp, and cloudless.
Where the burned-out shell of the Vasquez Auto Repair shop had once stood in squalor and ruin, now stood the steel and glass framework of the Vasquez Memorial Technical Institute & Canine Rescue Center.
Three hundred local community members, trade students, city officials, and members of the Castellano logistics network gathered beneath a massive white celebratory tent erected on the newly paved concrete courtyard.
In the center of the staging area stood a polished granite cornerstone engraved with clean, deep gold lettering:
THE VASQUEZ MEMORIAL INSTITUTE
Dedicated to the Unyielding Labor of Hector Vasquez and the Faithful Love of Ghost.
“Built on truth, fortified by community, and standing tall in the light.”
Nina stood at the podium wearing an elegant navy blazer and tailored trousers, her dark hair styled neatly, her hazel eyes shining with fierce, uncontainable pride as she looked out over the sea of cheering faces.
Beside her stood Lorenzo, towering in his signature charcoal suit, his hand resting securely on the small of her back. And sitting proudly right at the front of the stage, wearing a custom leather harness with a polished honorary badge, was Ghost.
"Six years ago," Nina began into the microphone, her voice clear, resonant, and carrying to every corner of the courtyard, "this ground was reduced to ash by men who believed that poverty, violence, and greed could permanently erase an honest man's legacy."
The courtyard fell into absolute, breathless silence.
"They believed that because we had no wealth and no powerful protectors, our voices didn't matter," Nina continued, her tone rising with sovereign strength. "They were wrong. Truth does not vanish in the fire. It rises from the smoke. And today, through the courage of a community that refused to stay silent and the unyielding loyalty of a faithful friend who remembered his home, we open a door that will never be locked again."

The entire crowd erupted into a thunderous, roaring standing ovation.
Students cheered, community leaders clapped with tears in their eyes, and flashbulbs illuminated the crisp morning air as Nina picked up the silver trowel to seal the mortar beneath the cornerstone.
