Chapter 18 - The Sanctuary by the Sea

By late afternoon, the celebration in Queens had concluded, and the Castellano entourage returned to the tranquil sanctuary of the Greenwich estate.
The sun was beginning its slow descent toward the horizon of Long Island Sound, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of violet, rose, and brilliant gold.
Nina walked down the private pebble beach alone for a quiet moment, kicking off her heels to let the cool sand massage her feet, while Ghost trotted happily beside her along the waterline, splashing his paws in the gentle tide.
Footsteps crunched softly behind her on the pebbles.
Lorenzo walked up, rolling up the sleeves of his crisp white linen shirt, carrying his jacket over his shoulder. He stopped a few feet away, watching her with a look of profound, unconditional devotion.
"You were magnificent today, Nina," Lorenzo said softly, his deep baritone carrying easily over the sound of the lapping waves. "Your father would have been prouder of you than words could ever express."
Nina turned around, walking back toward him until she stood right against his chest. She wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face into his broad shoulder, breathing in the clean scent of ocean air and cedar.
"I couldn't have done it without you, Lorenzo," she murmured against his skin. "You gave me back my history. You gave me back my future."
Lorenzo’s strong arms came around her waist, lifting her slightly as he pressed a tender, lingering kiss to the crown of her head.
"I didn't give you anything you didn't already earn, Tesoro," Lorenzo corrected gently, pulling back to look deep into her hazel-green eyes. "You walked into my penthouse covered in red sauce and mud, held a scarred dog against your chest, and reminded a mafia boss what a human soul looked like in the light."

Ghost let out a soft, happy bark, bounding back from the water to nudge both of their legs with his wet nose, shaking a spray of salty sea mist across the sand.
Both of them laughed, the sound carrying out over the vast, open American sea.
