Chapter 16 - The Return to Long Island Sound

Three weeks after their triumphant return from Europe, the autumn winds began to turn crisp and golden along the coastline of Long Island Sound.
The new Greenwich estate was ablaze with vibrant shades of crimson, copper, and amber as the seasonal foliage reached its peak beauty.
On the wide stone terrace overlooking the water, a warm fire crackled in the custom outdoor stone hearth, casting dancing golden reflections across the teak dining table where a quiet breakfast was laid out.
Nina sat wrapped in a heavy cashmere cardigan, sipping her coffee while sketching new architectural blueprints for the upcoming expansion of the Astoria Community Trade School in Queens—the very project funded by the recovered syndicate assets.
Across the lawn, Ghost and Barnaby were engaged in an enthusiastic game of chase, kicking up fallen red and yellow leaves as they sprinted toward the pebble beach.
A sleek black Maybach pulled up the gravel drive of the estate, and Captain Marcus Brody stepped out of the vehicle, carrying a thick manila envelope bearing the federal seal.
Marcus walked up the stone terrace steps, nodding respectfully to Nina before turning to Lorenzo, who had just stepped out through the glass doors with a fresh pot of coffee.
"Boss," Marcus reported crisply. "The Department of Justice just finalized the final asset distribution for the Vasquez Trust. The Astoria property deed has been officially deeded back to the community trust in perpetuity, free and clear of all encumbrances."
Nina’s hands stopped moving across her sketchbook. She looked up slowly, a bright, radiant smile breaking across her face.
"My father's auto shop ground... it's officially ours again?" Nina asked, her voice trembling slightly with sudden, overwhelming emotion.
May you like
"It’s yours, Nina," Marcus confirmed, handing her the official deed stamped with gold seals. "The foundation stone for the new technical institute is scheduled to be laid next month. The mayor of New York is flying out to preside over the ceremony."
Nina opened the folder, running her fingers over the legal descriptions and her late father's historic parcel boundaries. The ghost of the fire that had consumed her family's livelihood six years ago finally turned to ash, replaced by the foundation of a magnificent new beginning.
