Chapter 5 - The Handcuffs Click
"No... no, this is a mistake..." Ryan whimpered, looking around the room like a cornered animal. "Emily... tell them! Tell them we can work this out! I did it for us! For our future!"
I stood up, stepping around my father, and looked Ryan dead in the eye.
"You laid your hands on me in front of our daughter, Ryan," I said, my voice echoing through the foyer with a strength I didn't know I possessed. "You threatened her. You terrified her. You didn't do anything for us. You are a parasite."
Special Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling Ryan's arms behind his back.
The metallic CLICK-CLICK of the steel handcuffs echoed sharply through the room.
"Ryan Vance," Agent Miller read, "you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, identity theft, and tax evasion. You have the right to remain silent..."

"Emily! Emily, please!" Ryan screamed as the agents forced him toward the front door. "Don't let them do this! I'm your husband! Lily, tell your mother to stop them!"
Lily didn't look up. She buried her face deeper into my father's shoulder, covering her ears with her hands until the front door slammed shut, taking Ryan's panicked shrieks into the rainy night.
