Chapter 1 - The Five Words

The quiet hum of the suburban evening was shattered as the heavy front doors of our home swung open.

My father, Charles Whitmore, stood in the entryway. His dark wool coat was dusted with the rain falling outside, and his posture was absolute granite. Behind him stood two muscular men in dark suits—his personal security detail—their faces impassive, their eyes sharp and focused.

Ryan froze in the middle of the living room, his hands still clenched into fists. His chest was heaving from his previous tirade, but as my father stepped into the warm light of the foyer, every drop of blood drained from my husband's face.

"Mr. Whitmore..." Ryan stammered, his voice dropping an octave as he instinctively took a half-step back. "I... I didn't expect you tonight. We were just... having a private marital disagreement."

My father didn't look at the plush carpets or the expensive art Ryan had insisted on buying with my family's money. He looked straight down at me, taking in the red mark blooming across my cheek, the torn collar of my blouse, and the trembling in my hands as I pushed myself up from the hardwood floor.

"A disagreement, Ryan?" my father asked. His voice was unnervingly quiet, carrying a cold, heavy authority that filled the high ceilings of the house.

"She was lying to me, Charles," Ryan tried to explain, his hands coming up in a placating gesture. "She was out all afternoon, ignoring my calls—"

"I know what you really did," my father interrupted softly.

The five words hung in the air like an executioner's blade.

Ryan stopped breathing. His eyes darted toward the front door, then toward the staircase where the faint sound of seven-year-old Lily weeping could be heard from behind the locked bedroom door above.

"Charles, I don't know what you're talking about—"

"Lily," my father called out, raising his voice just enough to carry upstairs, his tone softening instantly. "Sweetheart, come down. Grandpa is here."
