Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Freedom

One year after that dark night in the suburban living room.

The autumn sun shone brightly over Lincoln Park, turning the leaves on the oak trees into brilliant shades of gold, orange, and deep scarlet.

My father, Lily, and I sat on a cozy green blanket near the edge of the pond, eating fresh strawberries and drinking chilled lemonade.

Lily was laughing loudly as she threw small breadcrumbs to a family of ducks swimming along the water's edge. Her face was full of color, her eyes bright and completely free of the terror that had once shadowed them.

My father looked at me, raising his crystal glass in a quiet toast. "To new beginnings, Emily."

"To new beginnings," I smiled, clinking my glass against his.

Lily ran back to the blanket, throwing her arms around my neck and resting her head against my shoulder as the warm autumn breeze blew through the trees.

"Mommy?" she asked softly.

"Yes, my sweet girl?"

"I love our new life," she whispered, looking up at me with absolute trust and peace.

I kissed the top of her head, holding her tight against my heart as the sun set over the Chicago skyline.

The nightmare was over. The lies had been destroyed. And together, we had reclaimed our freedom, our strength, and our home forever.
