Chapter 20 - The Sovereign Horizon

Later that evening, after our guests had departed and Lily was fast asleep in her sun-drenched bedroom upstairs, my father and I walked down the stone pathway to the private wooden dock overlooking Lake Michigan.
The night was crisp, peaceful, and safe, the vast sapphire sky blanketed with millions of sparkling stars.
The water below was calm, reflecting the moonlight like a vast sheet of polished glass.
I sat on the cedar bench, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea, watching the evening breeze rustle through the blooming rose bushes lining the shore.
My father sat beside me, wrapping a warm wool blanket around both of our shoulders, looking out over the endless dark water.
Two years ago, a cowardly husband had raised his fist in a suburban kitchen, believing that violence and intimidation could silence a mother and steal an empire.
He had believed that an isolated woman had no power, and that a corrupt system would protect his theft.
He had forgotten that when you strike a daughter of true honor, you do not break her spirit.
You awaken the strength of a family that will tear down the kingdom of lies and rebuild a fortress of truth.
I took a slow, deep breath of the fresh lake air, looking up at the stars twinkling in the vast, open Illinois sky.
The predators were locked behind concrete walls. The forged debts were erased forever.
We were whole.
May you like
We were sovereign.
And our home was finally, truly safe forever.
