Chapter 13 - The Judicial Tribunal

At 9:00 AM on Wednesday, the grand courtroom of the Illinois Judicial Inquiry Board on LaSalle Street was an arena of absolute reckoning.

Judge Harrison Vance sat behind the elevated defense table in an expensive charcoal bespoke suit, adjusting his gold cufflinks, exuding the smug, untouchable arrogance of a man who had manipulated state law for thirty years.

"Members of the board," Vance argued, his booming voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "These allegations brought by the Sterling estate are a malicious smear campaign designed to intimidate the bench. My financial holdings have been fully disclosed under annual ethics declarations!"

BANG.

The heavy double oak doors at the back of the chamber were thrown wide open.

My father and I walked down the center aisle, flanked by four armed federal marshals and Special Agent Marcus Cole from the FBI’s Financial Crimes Task Force.

I wore an immaculate ivory tailored pantsuit, my posture straight, my presence commanding the total, breathless silence of the forty judicial commissioners and journalists in the gallery.

"Your annual ethics declarations are a fabrication, Judge Vance," I announced, my voice carrying clearly to every corner of the vast room.

Special Agent Cole stepped to the center podium, placing the decrypted banking logs and the high-resolution scans of the bearer bonds directly onto the clerk’s desk.

"At eleven-fifteen last night," Agent Cole announced, "forensic auditors confirmed that Judge Vance’s private yacht in Fort Lauderdale was purchased using two point four million dollars wired directly from Richard's offshore account forty-eight hours after he signed the order freezing Emily Sterling's bank accounts."

Judge Vance’s face turned an ash-gray color. His hands began to shake uncontrollably against his legal pad.

The lead commissioner on the tribunal panel stood up, slamming the heavy wooden gavel down with the force of an executioner's axe.

BANG.

"Harrison Vance," the commissioner declared. "Your judicial credentials are stripped with immediate effect. You are remanded into federal custody pending formal indictment for judicial bribery, racketeering, and obstruction of justice."

Two federal marshals stepped behind Vance’s chair, pulling steel handcuffs from their belts.

The sound of the cuffs snapping shut around the corrupt judge’s wrists echoed across the silent room like a thunderclap.
