Chapter 12 - The Federal Subpoena

By 2:00 PM, the marble rotunda of the Dirksen Federal Building in downtown Chicago was humming with intense, focused activity.
Chief Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Jenkins met us in the private consultation suite on the twenty-fourth floor. On the glass conference table, she laid out twelve color-coded evidence binders containing the decrypted digital communications extracted from Richard's private server.
"We have Judge Harrison Vance dead to rights," Prosecutor Jenkins stated with razor-sharp precision. "The encrypted email logs prove that Vance personally coached Richard on how to structure the offshore trusts in Belize to bypass the automatic financial disclosure mandates."
"What is his defense posture?" my father asked, standing beside the panoramic window overlooking Lake Michigan.
"He claims the twenty-two million dollars in bearer bonds was a blind family blind trust inheritance," Jenkins smiled grimly. "He thinks his judicial immunity protects him from an emergency grand jury subpoena."
The heavy double doors of the suite clicked open.
Lily stepped into the room holding Marcus’s assistant’s hand, wearing her favorite pink cardigan, clutching her plush teddy bear. She walked straight to my chair, climbing onto my lap and wrapping her arms around my neck.
"Mommy," Lily whispered softly, her big blue eyes looking at the folders on the table. "Is the bad judge trying to take our home again?"
I gently kissed her forehead, smoothing her blonde curls. "Nobody is taking our home, sweetheart. Grandpa and Mommy have the truth on our side."
Prosecutor Jenkins looked at Lily, her expression softening with profound respect. "This little girl’s phone call to your father twelve months ago saved an empire, Emily. Today, we finish what she started."

Jenkins picked up the gold fountain pen, signing her name across the master federal arrest warrant with a decisive, sweeping stroke.
"Let’s serve the subpoena," Jenkins declared.
