Chapter 16 - The Cleansing of the Estate

By Saturday morning, the dark clouds that had lingered over the past cleared, replaced by a radiant, golden sunrise that flooded our new private thirty-acre estate in Lake Forest with brilliant light.
The atmosphere around the property was active, bustling, and completely renewed.
The old suburban house where the assault had occurred had been sold at public auction, and every single dollar was donated to the local domestic violence shelter.
In the center of the sun-drenched master garden on the new estate, six-year-old Lily was running through the grass with Barnaby, a rescue golden retriever puppy we had adopted, laughing with pure, musical delight as the dog chased her sneakers.
The garden was filled with blooming white hydrangeas, fragrant lavender bushes, and wide stone pathways leading down to a private pebble beach on Lake Michigan.
My father walked onto the stone terrace, wearing a casual white linen shirt and dark trousers, holding a tray with two steaming mugs of hazelnut coffee and a plate of fresh blueberry scones.
He set the tray on the cedar table, walked over to my chair, and leaned against the stone balustrade, watching Lily score a goal between two wooden posts on the lawn below.
"Look at her, Emily," my father murmured softly, his voice thick with deep, protective pride. "Not a single shadow left in her eyes."
"Because the light was stronger than their darkness, Dad," I smiled, resting my hand over his sleeve. "She knows who she is now."
Lily spotted us from across the lawn.
She broke into a full toddler sprint, her sneakers slapping happily against the warm grass, skidding to a stop right in front of us and throwing both arms around our legs.

"Grandpa! Mommy!" Lily beamed, her big blue eyes dancing with pure, untamed joy. "Barnaby helped me score six goals today! Did you see the last one?!"
"I saw every single one, my champion," my father laughed, scooping Lily into a massive, warm embrace, lifting her high into the golden morning air while she squealed with delight.
