Chapter 9 - Courtney’s Bargain

Hospital security locked down the neonatal floor.A guard stood outside Victoria’s room while another searched the family lounge. No one found the person who had taken the photograph.Victoria held Noah’s hand through the incubator opening.“Someone was close enough to touch you,” Elena said quietly.“I know.”“You should not be alone.”“I’m not.”Elena looked at Samantha, Courtney, and Detective Bell. “That’s a crowded definition of not alone.”Victoria managed a tired smile. “It’s new for me.”Courtney asked to speak privately.“I’m not leaving you alone with her,” Bell said.“Then stay by the door.”Courtney sat beside Victoria. “I can tell you where the real wall is.”Victoria’s eyes narrowed. “You know?”“Charles showed me the floor plans.”“Why?”“He wanted me to find the Luxembourg account.”“Did you?”“No. Lucas changed the house after we got married.”“You were in my house often.”“I never had access to his private rooms.”“You had access to enough.”Courtney lowered her voice. “The blue nursery wall is a decoy. There’s a second nursery in the old carriage house.”Victoria stared at her.“Lucas renovated it before Noah was born,” Courtney continued. “He told the contractor to use blue paint.”“Why didn’t I know?”“Because he wanted it hidden.”“From whom?”“Everyone.”Victoria looked at Noah. “Why tell me now?”Courtney reached into her coat and pulled out a key.“Because Charles thinks I have it.”“Do you?”“This opens the carriage house.”“You said you didn’t find the account.”“I found something else.”She placed a folded receipt on the table. It was from a storage company in Syracuse.“Charles rented a unit under my name,” Courtney said. “I went there once. There were boxes of documents and a recording.”“What recording?”“Lucas and Charles arguing.”Victoria’s voice hardened. “Why didn’t you bring it to Bell?”“Because Charles threatened to kill my brother.”Bell stepped inside. “Your brother is alive and living in Vermont.”Courtney flinched. “You investigated me.”“I investigate everyone.”“Then you know Charles has people watching him.”“I know.”Samantha took the receipt. “What do you want in exchange?”Courtney’s eyes met Victoria’s. “A lawyer.”“You need a criminal defense attorney,” Samantha said.“Not you.”“I know.”“I want immunity for what I did.”Bell shook his head. “That’s not mine to offer.”“Then get me someone who can.”Victoria studied the young woman who had laughed while she stood in labor on a doorstep. Fear had not erased what Courtney had done, but it had made the shape of her choices easier to see.“You’ll get counsel,” Victoria said. “No promises beyond that.”Courtney nodded. “Fair.”They went to the carriage house after dark. The structure stood behind Victoria’s home, hidden by overgrown lilacs. Lucas had told her it held gardening equipment. The key opened a side door.Inside, dust covered everything except a blue-painted section of wall.“How do we find the opening?” Bell asked.Victoria ran her hand along the trim.“Lucas always hid things near something ordinary.”She examined a row of hooks. One held a small brass horseshoe, a wedding gift from Lucas’s grandfather. She lifted it.The wall clicked.A panel opened.Inside was a digital recorder, a bundle of bank documents, and a photograph.Victoria picked up the photograph. It showed Lucas, Charles, and a third man standing outside a warehouse. The third man was Ray Danner, the missing mechanic. On the back Lucas had written a date: THREE DAYS BEFORE OUR WEDDING.Bell started the recorder.Charles’s voice filled the room.“You don’t get to threaten me with my own money.”Lucas answered, “It was never your money.”“It belonged to your father.”“And he stole it from Victoria’s mother.”Victoria stopped breathing.Charles said, “Diane signed every document.”Lucas replied, “Diane was unconscious.”Then a woman’s voice spoke.Victoria recognized it immediately.Courtney’s voice.“What happens if Victoria finds out?”The recording clicked off.Courtney turned white.“I wasn’t there,” she whispered.Victoria looked at her.Courtney’s phone began to ring. The screen showed an unknown number. She answered.Charles said, “Bring Victoria to the storage unit, or Noah disappears before sunrise.”
