Chapter 4 - The Route Lucas Never Took

Victoria watched the video three times before she could make herself stop.Lucas sat in his office, jacket discarded, dark hair falling over his forehead. Behind him, a storm pressed against the windows. He looked tired but alert.“I found six shell companies,” he said in the recording. “All of them route through a carrier called Northstar Transit. Northstar is owned by a trust in the Cayman Islands, but the authorized signer is Charles.”He leaned closer to the camera.“I confronted him tonight. He said he needed time. I told him time was over.”Victoria reached toward the screen.“I’m going to the garage in Syracuse. There’s a physical file there. I’m not taking it home because I don’t know who has access to the house.”He paused.“If anything happens, Samantha knows the legal plan. But the evidence is in the place no one expects.”The video ended.Samantha sat beside Victoria in the hospital family room. “The metadata confirms it was recorded at 6:03 p.m.”“He died at 9:18.”“Yes.”“He never made it to the garage.”Detective Bell stood by the window. “His phone placed him on Interstate 81 at 8:47. The route was consistent with his home.”“He was headed home,” Victoria said. “Then why did he tell the camera he was going to Syracuse?”Bell turned. “Maybe he changed his mind.”“Lucas didn’t change his mind without telling me.”Samantha slid a map across the table. “Look.”The route from Lucas’s office to the garage passed north through downtown Syracuse. His phone traveled south for eleven minutes, then appeared on the interstate.“The phone could have been moved,” Bell said.“Could someone have taken the SUV?” Victoria asked.“The vehicle recognized Lucas’s key.”“What if there were two keys?”Bell’s expression changed. “The spare was in your house.”“It’s gone.”“When did you last see it?”“The morning Lucas died.”Samantha looked up sharply. “Who had access?”Victoria thought of the house. “Charles. Courtney. Me.”“And the housekeeper?” Bell asked.“Mara left after the funeral.”Bell wrote the name down. “I’ll find her.”Noah’s monitor alarm sounded in the NICU. Victoria hurried to the glass, heart pounding.Elena, the nurse, met her at the door. “He had a brief desaturation. He recovered.”Victoria pressed her palm to the glass. Noah’s tiny chest rose and fell beneath the wires.“He’s fighting,” Elena said.“His father was a fighter.”“Then he has a good teacher.”Samantha joined her. “The emergency hearing is tomorrow morning.”“I need to be there.”“You can appear by video.”“No. Charles will see me sitting in a hospital bed and call me weak.”“Let him.”Victoria turned. “I’m done letting him decide what people see.”The hearing lasted forty minutes.Charles’s attorney argued that Victoria was physically and emotionally incapable of managing a multimillion-dollar company. He called her grief “a destabilizing condition.”Samantha stood. “My client has given birth prematurely, lost her husband, and been unlawfully removed from her residence. Despite that, she located evidence of forgery and financial fraud in less than twenty-four hours. If opposing counsel wants to call that instability, I invite the court to examine his definition.”The judge granted Victoria temporary access to the house and froze the disputed accounts. She also ordered Charles to surrender company records.Outside the courtroom, Charles caught Victoria by the elevator.“You think Samantha is saving you,” he said.Victoria kept walking.“She’s using you to take the company.”“It was Lucas’s company.”“Lucas was going to destroy it.”The elevator doors opened.Charles lowered his voice. “Ask Samantha why Lucas changed his route that night.”Victoria stopped.“Ask her why the last call on his phone came from her office.”The doors began to close.“And ask her,” Charles said, “why she told the police he was alone.”Victoria forced the doors open. “What does that mean?”Charles smiled for the first time since Lucas died.“It means your trusted attorney has been lying to you.”The doors shut between them. That evening, Detective Bell called with an update.“We found Mara,” he said.“Where?”“At a motel outside Utica.”“What did she say?”Bell hesitated. “She claims she saw Lucas arguing with Samantha Vance on the night he died.”Victoria sat rigidly in the hospital chair.“That’s impossible,” she said.“Why?”“Samantha was with me.”“At what time?”Victoria looked at the video timestamp.Bell’s voice turned grim. “The argument happened at 7:31.”Victoria’s phone showed Samantha’s first call to her at 7:34.Three minutes after Lucas disappeared from the road.
