Chapter 3 - A Signature in Blue Ink

The darkness lasted only three seconds, but in those seconds Victoria heard the house breathe. The lights returned. Charles stood in the doorway, his face drained of color.“What did you do?” he demanded.Victoria held up the key. “I found what Lucas left.”“Give it to me.”“No.”Courtney shifted behind him. “Charles, maybe she should have it.”“You stay out of this.”Samantha took the key from Victoria and examined it. “It’s a cabinet key.”“There’s a cabinet in the study,” Victoria said. “Behind the books.”Charles moved toward the room. The officer blocked him. “Mr. Baldwin, step back.”“That is my office.”“It’s inside the residence.”Victoria entered the study. Lucas had hated clutter, but Charles had filled the shelves with binders and old shipping manifests. She ran her fingers across the backs of the books until one shifted.Behind it was a narrow wooden door. The key fit.Inside sat a blue metal box.Charles whispered, “No.”Victoria lifted it out.Samantha said, “Open it.”The box contained a flash drive, a sealed envelope, and a handwritten ledger. On the envelope Lucas had written Victoria’s name. She broke the seal.My love, if you are reading this, I failed to make it home—or someone made sure I didn’t.Victoria closed her eyes.Lucas’s handwriting continued beneath the first line.Charles has been diverting money from Baldwin-Gallagher through shell carriers. I confronted him. He claimed the transfers were authorized by you. They were not. Samantha has the trust documents, but she does not have this ledger. Do not trust anyone who asks you to sign before you see the original records.Victoria looked at Samantha.“He didn’t tell you about the ledger?”“No.”“Why would he hide it from you?”“Because he was afraid my office was compromised.”Charles gave a bitter laugh. “This is absurd. Lucas was paranoid.”“He was investigating you,” Victoria said.“He was mismanaging the company.”“Then why forge my signature?”Charles’s eyes hardened. “I never forged anything.”Samantha opened the ledger. “These are payment references. They match the transactions in the emails.”Courtney edged closer. “Maybe Lucas wrote it all to frame Charles.”Victoria turned. “You know a lot about what’s inside this box.”Courtney froze.“I didn’t say there was a ledger,” Victoria continued.“I saw it.”“When?”“Charles showed me.”Charles stared at her.Courtney’s voice dropped. “You told me we needed to know what he had.”The officer pulled out his notebook.Charles pointed at her. “You’re confused.”“I’m not confused.”“Courtney.”“You said Lucas had backups. You said he was going to ruin us.”Victoria felt the room tilt.“Us?” she asked.Courtney swallowed. “I meant you and Charles.”“No. You meant you and him.”Samantha took the flash drive. “We’ll have this imaged by a forensic specialist.”The officer’s radio crackled.“Detective Bell is on his way,” he said. “He wants to speak with Mrs. Gallagher about the accident.”Charles stiffened. “This is a civil matter.”“Not anymore,” Samantha replied.Detective Owen Bell arrived ten minutes later. He was broad-shouldered, quiet, and carried a folder worn at the corners.“Mrs. Gallagher,” he said, “I’m sorry about your husband.”“Thank you.”“The crash investigation was closed as accidental.”“You’re reopening it?”“I’m reviewing it.”Bell glanced at the ledger. “Where did you find that?”“In a locked cabinet Lucas hid from my father.”The detective opened his folder. “There’s something you should see.”He placed a photograph on the desk. It showed Lucas’s SUV crushed against a guardrail, the front end folded like paper.“The tow report says the brake line failed.”“And?”Bell tapped the image. “The line didn’t fail where it would normally rupture. It was cut cleanly, then pinched closed.”Victoria felt cold spread through her chest.“Why wasn’t that in the report?”“The mechanic who inspected the vehicle changed his statement.”“Who was the mechanic?”Bell looked at Charles. “A Baldwin-Gallagher contractor named Ray Danner.”Charles’s voice rose. “This is harassment.”“Where is Danner now?” Victoria asked.Bell closed the folder. “Missing.”The house fell silent.Samantha turned to Victoria. “We need to leave.”“I’m not leaving without Noah’s things.”“Your baby is at the hospital.”“His father’s evidence is here.”Charles stepped close enough for Victoria to smell whiskey on his breath.“You have no idea what you’re touching,” he said.Victoria held Lucas’s letter against her heart. “Then you should be worried.”That night, after Victoria returned to the hospital, the forensic specialist called Samantha. The flash drive had opened. It contained one file. The file was a video recorded by Lucas four hours before the crash. At the end of the recording, Lucas looked directly into the camera and said, “If Charles is standing beside you, Victoria, he already knows where the second key is.”
