Chapter 14 - The Ring of Ashes

For several seconds, no one moved.Victoria stared at the photograph in Ray Danner’s hand, then at the black stone on Samantha’s finger. The ring was narrow, almost severe, with a square onyx setting surrounded by a thin silver border. It looked exactly like the ring in the photograph.“Take it off,” Victoria said.Samantha did not argue. She slid the ring from her finger and placed it on the bed tray beside Ray’s photograph.Ray pushed himself higher against his pillows. “That’s the ring.”“You’re certain?” Bell asked.“I’m certain of the stone. I saw it when she reached for the brake assembly.”Samantha’s face had gone still. “You saw me?”Ray looked from her to Victoria. “I thought I did.”“That isn’t an answer,” Victoria said.Samantha drew a slow breath. “I was at the company garage that night.”Victoria felt the room narrow around her. “You said you spoke to Lucas by phone.”“I did speak to him by phone. At 7:18. Then I drove to the garage.”“Why?”“He asked me to come.”“And you left that part out.”“Yes.”The simple admission hurt more than an excuse would have.Bell’s voice sharpened. “What time did you arrive?”“7:31.”Victoria looked at the photograph again. “Mara saw you.”“Mara saw my coat and my profile. I was wearing red.” Samantha folded her hands in front of her. “Lucas had found the missing payments and believed someone inside the company was tracking him. He wanted to give me the second key, but he didn’t trust my office. He asked me to hold it outside the firm.”“You had it the entire time.”“I had it until yesterday.”“Why didn’t you tell me?”Samantha’s control finally cracked. “Because Lucas told me that if anything happened, I was to protect you without telling you everything at once. He believed someone in my office was reporting to Charles. I thought if I disclosed the meeting, Charles would know exactly what Lucas had feared.”“You don’t get to use Lucas’s instructions as a shield.”“No,” Samantha said quietly. “I don’t.”Bell took the ring from the tray and examined it beneath the overhead light. “This may be the same ring, but it doesn’t prove Samantha cut the brake line.”“It proves she was there,” Victoria said.“It proves I was there,” Samantha agreed. “It does not prove I harmed Lucas.”The hospital door opened. Priya entered carrying a laptop and a paper evidence bag.“I found the garage backup,” she said. “The security system was wiped, but the maintenance server kept a low-resolution copy.”Bell moved aside so she could set the laptop on the table. The video showed the company garage under falling snow. At 7:29, Samantha’s car entered the lot. She stepped out in a red coat and walked toward Lucas’s SUV.At 7:46, she left through the east gate.At 7:53, another woman entered through the west gate. Her coat was red. Her face was hidden by a scarf, but she wore something bright on her left hand.“There,” Priya said. The woman stopped beside Lucas’s vehicle and reached beneath the front bumper. A moment later, a dark object fell from her hand. She looked toward the camera, then walked out of frame.Ray leaned toward the screen. “That’s her.”“Can you see her face?” Bell asked.“No. But the height is right.”Victoria watched the woman disappear into the snow. “The ring was a copy.”Samantha turned the ring over. A tiny crack ran through the silver border. “The original has this fracture. It happened when I dropped it in Lucas’s garage two years ago.”Priya enlarged the woman’s hand. The stone was smooth and unbroken.“A deliberate imitation,” Bell said.“Someone wanted us to think Samantha was responsible,” Victoria said.“Someone who knew she wore the ring,” Samantha replied.Courtney, who had been silent near the door, suddenly spoke. “Charles knew.”Everyone looked at her.“He asked me once why Samantha wore a black stone,” Courtney said. “He called it her warning ring. He said she wore it whenever she expected trouble.”Victoria felt a cold certainty settle over her. “He knew Samantha would be blamed.”“He knew the ring would make the story believable,” Courtney said. “He also knew where the cameras were.”Bell’s phone rang. He listened, then looked at Victoria.“Charles filed an emergency motion to remove Samantha as counsel and place the company under temporary receivership.”“On what grounds?” Samantha asked.“Undisclosed contact with the deceased before the crash, alleged evidence tampering, and a claim that Victoria is being manipulated by a conflicted attorney.”Victoria looked at the black stone ring. “He’s turning Samantha’s secrecy into evidence against her.”“And he’s trying to make me look incapable of choosing my own counsel,” she said.Priya closed the laptop. “The board meeting is in the morning.”Victoria stood. Her legs were unsteady, but she did not sit back down. “Then we go in prepared.”Samantha frowned. “You need rest.”“I need a plan.”Naomi Chen, the independent attorney assigned by the court, arrived an hour later. She was small, gray-haired, and direct enough to make Samantha look almost gentle.“I’ve reviewed the trust,” Naomi said. “The fraud clause is enforceable. But if we want the court to vest control in Victoria immediately, we need a clean chain of proof.”“We have the forged signatures,” Bell said.“We have evidence of forgery. We also have an attorney who concealed a meeting with the decedent, an assistant who stole evidence, and a witness who admits participating in the financial scheme.”Courtney lifted her chin. “I’m not asking anyone to call me innocent.”“Good,” Naomi said. “Courts distrust perfection. They understand fear, greed, and bad decisions. What they need is chronology.”Victoria looked at the notes spread across the table. “Then we give them chronology.”She began assigning tasks. Priya would document the transfers. Bell would authenticate the garage video. Courtney would provide every message Charles had sent her. Samantha would disclose the 7:31 meeting in a sworn statement. Naomi would argue for a preservation order covering the Luxembourg account.Samantha watched Victoria write.“You’re not the woman who stood on the porch,” she said.Victoria did not look up. “That woman was in labor.”“She was frightened.”“I’m still frightened.”“You don’t look it.”Victoria finally met her eyes. “That’s because I’ve learned fear is information. It tells me where to look.”The hearing began before noon. Charles appeared beside his new attorney, immaculate in a navy suit. He looked older than he had the day before, but his expression remained practiced. His attorney called Samantha’s undisclosed meeting “a devastating conflict.”Naomi stood. “My client’s former counsel concealed a fact. She has now disclosed it under oath, surrendered physical evidence, and agreed to independent oversight. That is not proof of incapacity. It is proof that the investigation is moving.”Judge Hart studied Samantha. “Did you meet Lucas Gallagher at 7:31 p.m. on the night of his death?”“Yes.”“Did you argue?”“We disagreed about whether he should go to the garage alone.”“Did you see him alive when you left?”“Yes.”“What did he give you?”Samantha looked at Victoria. “A brass key.”Charles’s attorney rose. “Your Honor, the witness has admitted concealing material evidence.”Judge Hart silenced him with a glance. “She has admitted failing to disclose material evidence. The distinction matters.”The judge ordered Samantha to remain as a witness but not control the company’s legal representation. Naomi became Victoria’s lead counsel. The court also granted a preservation order over the Luxembourg account and all company servers. It was a partial victory. As they left, Charles caught Victoria near the courthouse steps.“You think you’ve won because a judge let you keep a lawyer,” he said.“I think you’re afraid because the records are no longer yours to destroy.”His smile disappeared. “The Luxembourg account will not wait for your grief to end.”“Neither will the law.”Charles leaned closer. “Ask Samantha what Lucas said after she left.”Victoria held his gaze. “I will.”He walked away. That evening, Naomi received an alert from the Luxembourg bank. Someone had requested a beneficiary verification using Victoria’s forged signature. The message included a deadline.Forty-eight hours.Under the request was an authorization code: BG-143.
