Chapter 10 - The Night the Safe Opened

Courtney dropped the phone.“He knows we found the carriage house,” she said.Bell took out his weapon. “We’re going to the hospital.”“No,” Victoria said.Everyone turned.“If Charles believes Courtney is bringing me to the storage unit, he’ll show himself.”Samantha’s voice was firm. “You are thirty-two weeks postpartum with a premature infant.”“And Charles has threatened my child.”“That doesn’t make you bait.”“It makes me the person he’s afraid of.”Bell shook his head. “We can use Courtney’s phone to trace him.”“He’ll know if she doesn’t appear.”Courtney picked up the phone. “I’ll go.”Victoria looked at her. “You’ll go with police hidden nearby.”“Charles will see them.”“Then we make him see what he expects.”The plan took an hour. A plainclothes team surrounded the storage facility. Courtney drove her own car. Victoria stayed in the back seat beneath a blanket, wearing a knit cap and a medical mask. Samantha sat beside her.“If anything changes,” Samantha said, “we leave.”“I know.”“Do you?”Victoria looked at the dark road. “No. But I’m learning.”The storage unit stood at the end of a row beneath a flickering light. Courtney unlocked it.Boxes filled the space. Charles had labeled them with dates and false company names.Courtney found a black safe behind a stack of tires.“I don’t have the combination,” she said.Victoria saw a line of numbers scratched into the concrete.“Lucas’s birthday,” she said. The safe opened.Inside lay a bundle of old documents, a cassette recorder, and a red envelope.Courtney reached for the envelope.A gunshot cracked outside.Everyone froze.Bell shouted, “Down!”The police team moved. Tires screeched. A vehicle tore away from the far end of the lot.Victoria crouched behind the safe, one hand covering her abdomen though the pregnancy was over and the gesture had become habit.“Are you hurt?” Samantha asked.“No.”Courtney stared at the red envelope. “That wasn’t Charles.”“How do you know?” Bell asked.“Charles doesn’t miss.”The envelope contained a letter from Diane Baldwin. My daughter, if you ever read this, understand that your father did not build Baldwin-Gallagher. He took it. The first theft was from my family’s freight company. The second was from Lucas’s father. I signed nothing willingly. Charles kept me sedated and told everyone I was ill.Victoria’s hands shook. The letter continued.Lucas knows. I made him promise to protect you. If he fails, trust the person who asks you to be brave, not the person who asks you to be obedient.Samantha read over her shoulder. “There’s a date.”“The day before my mother died.”“She may have been preparing evidence.”The cassette recorder held one more conversation.Charles said, “You think a letter changes ownership?”Diane answered weakly, “No. But it changes the story.”“Stories belong to whoever survives.”“Not this one.”Victoria closed her eyes.Outside, police found a dropped glove and a trail of blood from the fleeing vehicle, but no suspect.Bell returned. “The shooter wasn’t trying to kill anyone.”“Then what was he trying to do?” Victoria asked.“Destroy the safe.”He held up a small incendiary device.Samantha looked at the documents. “Someone wanted these burned.”Courtney’s face had gone gray. “Charles knew the safe existed.”“You said he didn’t know you had the key,” Victoria said.“He didn’t.”“Then someone else is involved.”Bell’s phone rang.He listened, then his expression changed.“The hospital security team just found a man inside the neonatal unit.”Victoria surged to her feet.“Who?”Bell looked at Samantha.“Devon Pike.”Samantha whispered, “My assistant.”Bell’s next words were barely audible.“He was carrying a syringe.”
