Chapter 12 - Mile Marker 143

The vault could not be opened without a court order.Judge Hart signed one at dawn, but she added a condition: Victoria had to attend with an independent observer and could not remove original materials from the premises.“She’s treating me like a suspect,” Victoria said.“She’s treating everyone like a suspect,” Bell replied. The independent observer was Priya Shah.At the headquarters, the vault sat beneath the records room behind a steel door. Samantha inserted the brass key. The lock clicked, but the door remained sealed.Victoria noticed a small keypad.“Lucas liked layers,” she said.“What code?” Priya asked.Victoria remembered their first anniversary. Lucas had taken her to a diner outside Syracuse and drawn a heart around a number on the receipt.“One-four-three.”The keypad flashed green.Inside were shelves of documents and a locked drawer. The original Baldwin-Gallagher share certificates lay in a fireproof case.Priya exhaled. “Charles can’t deny the ownership now.”Samantha lifted a folder. “Here are the trust instruments.”Victoria read the key provision. If any person attempts to transfer, encumber, or conceal protected assets through a forged signature or coercive act against Victoria Baldwin Gallagher, all controlling interests shall vest immediately in Victoria and her lawful child.“That’s the fraud clause,” Samantha said.“It’s stronger than you made it sound.”“Lucas wanted you protected, not frightened.”The locked drawer held a small memory card. They played it on Priya’s laptop.Lucas appeared again, this time sitting in the vault.“Victoria, you may be angry that I kept this from you,” he said. “You have every right. I wanted to tell you before Noah was born. I thought I had one more week.”He rubbed his eyes.“Charles is not the only person taking money. Someone at the company is feeding him internal schedules. I’m following the trail to Northstar.”The video shifted to a spreadsheet. One employee code appeared repeatedly beside the transfers.“BG-143,” Priya whispered.Victoria stared. “What does that mean?”“Employee designation,” Priya said. “I don’t recognize it.”Lucas continued. “The same code appears in vehicle access logs. Whoever has it knew my route and knew when I would be alone.”The video ended.Bell looked at Samantha. “We need the access records.”Priya pulled them from the system. The code BG-143 had been used to enter the company garage on the night of the crash. The user’s name was hidden.“Can you recover it?” Bell asked.Priya typed rapidly.“The system was altered.”“By Charles?” Victoria asked.“Maybe.”“What is mile marker 143?” Samantha asked.Victoria looked at the map from the crash investigation. “The accident happened near mile marker 143.”Bell’s radio crackled. An officer had found fresh tire tracks near that section of highway. They drove there under a sky the color of steel. The guardrail had been repaired, but a dark scar remained on the pavement. Bell walked the shoulder while Victoria stayed beside the patrol car.“I shouldn’t be here,” she said.Samantha stood near her. “You don’t have to look.”“I need to know where he was.”Bell returned carrying a small piece of broken plastic.“Found this beneath the guardrail.”Priya examined it. “Fleet tracker casing.”“The company installed trackers on all executive vehicles,” Bell said. “This one was ripped out before the crash.”Victoria remembered Lucas complaining that his SUV had been making a faint clicking noise.“He told me someone had moved his seat,” she said.“When?” Bell asked.“The week before he died.”“Did he say who?”“He thought it was me.”Samantha’s face tightened. “Because someone wanted him to suspect you.”The wind blew snow across the road.Bell’s phone rang. He listened.“We recovered the hidden user behind BG-143.”“Who?” Victoria asked.Bell looked at her.“The account belonged to Lucas Gallagher.”Victoria shook her head. “He wouldn’t.”“The system says he used his own credentials to access the garage.”Samantha whispered, “Someone cloned his badge.”Bell’s eyes remained on Victoria.“Or Lucas was involved in what happened.”Victoria looked down at the broken tracker casing. On the underside, scratched into the plastic, were four words.DON’T TRUST THE WOMAN WHO KNOWS.
