Chapter 7 - A Friendly Judge

The board meeting ended without a vote.Courtney’s flash drive was handed to Detective Bell, then to a court-appointed examiner. Charles left through a side door, but not before leaning toward Victoria.“You brought a thief into my boardroom.”“You brought her into my house.”“You will regret believing her.”Courtney watched him go. “He says that whenever he’s afraid.”Victoria faced her. “You expect me to believe you now?”“No.”“Good.”Courtney swallowed. “I know what I did.”“Do you?”“I took the spare key.”“Why?”“Charles said Lucas was hiding evidence in the car. He told me to put a tracker under the bumper.”“Did you?”“No.”“Why not?”Courtney glanced at Samantha. “Because Lucas caught me.”Victoria’s anger sharpened. “You were in my garage?”“He was alive when I left.”“When?”“Around seven.”“What happened after that?”Courtney’s hands trembled. “He called Charles. They argued. Lucas said he was going to the police.”“And you went home?”“I went to the airfield.”“Why?”“I was going to leave.”The admission hung between them.Courtney said, “Charles had been taking money for months. I found out after he made me sign paperwork for Lantern Ridge. He promised it was an investment. Then I saw the transfers.”“You stayed.”“I was afraid.”“You laughed at me.”Courtney’s eyes filled. “I know.”Victoria looked away. The emergency hearing began the next morning. Charles arrived with a new attorney and a stack of medical records obtained without Victoria’s permission.“Mrs. Gallagher has suffered a premature delivery,” the attorney said. “She is emotionally compromised and cannot be trusted with complex assets.”Samantha rose. “Those records contain protected information.”“They are relevant.”“So is the fact that opposing counsel obtained them from a hospital employee.”The judge, Evelyn Hart, frowned. “Counsel, explain.”The attorney shifted. “They were provided anonymously.”“Then they will be excluded.”Charles leaned toward his lawyer and whispered furiously.Victoria watched Judge Hart. Something about her expression seemed familiar. After the hearing, Victoria asked, “Have you handled my father before?”“Years ago,” Judge Hart said. “A zoning dispute involving Baldwin-Gallagher.”“Did he win?”“He usually did.”“Why?”Judge Hart’s gaze moved to Charles. “Because he usually had better lawyers.”In the hallway, Samantha received a call. Her face tightened.“What is it?” Victoria asked.“The examiner found a second transfer agreement.”“With my signature?”“Yes.”“Is it forged?”“The signature is yours.”Victoria stopped walking. “What?”“We’re verifying the ink and paper.”“I didn’t sign anything.”“I believe you.”“That doesn’t make it disappear.”The agreement transferred Victoria’s interest in the house to Charles six months before Lucas died. It included a typed statement that Victoria had received a cash settlement.“I never received money,” Victoria said.Samantha read the document again. “There’s a witness signature.”“Who?”Victoria’s stomach turned.“Diane Baldwin.”Her mother had died when Victoria was sixteen.“That’s impossible,” Victoria whispered.Charles approached slowly. “Your mother signed it before she died.”“She was in a coma for three weeks.”“You were a child. You don’t remember everything.”Victoria stepped toward him. “You forged her signature too.”“Careful.”“You built everything on stolen names.”Charles’s eyes turned flat. “Your mother knew what I was doing.”“Then why did she leave me nothing?”“Because she understood you couldn’t handle it.”Samantha pulled Victoria back.At that moment, Courtney ran from the courthouse restroom.“The drive is gone,” she said.“What drive?” Victoria asked.“The one I gave Bell. Someone took it from the evidence room.”Detective Bell appeared at the end of the hall. “No one entered the room.”Courtney shook her head. “Then someone copied it.”Victoria looked at Samantha. “Who has access?”Samantha’s assistant, Devon Pike, came around the corner holding a briefcase.“I do,” he said. His face was pale.Bell reached for him.Devon opened the briefcase instead.Inside was the original transfer agreement bearing Victoria’s signature.“I didn’t steal the drive,” Devon said. “I stole this.”“Why?” Samantha demanded.Devon looked at Charles.“Because he paid me to make sure it disappeared.”Charles took one step backward. Then Judge Hart emerged from her chambers and said, “Mr. Baldwin, we need to discuss what you just admitted in the hallway.”
