Chapter 1 - The Ringing Phone

The phone rang inside the house just as Victoria Baldwin Gallagher’s water broke. She stood barefoot on the front step, one hand gripping the iron railing and the other pressed beneath her enormous belly. Warmth spread down her legs. For three weeks, grief had made every sensation feel distant. This was different. Immediate. Terrifying.“Oh,” she whispered. “No. Not now.”Behind the glass, Courtney Baldwin laughed.Victoria looked through the locked front door at her father’s twenty-four-year-old wife. Courtney wore Victoria’s cream sweater and Lucas’s old house slippers. She held a champagne flute in one hand, though it was barely noon.“You’ve got to be kidding,” Courtney said. “You’re doing this on the porch?”“Open the door.”“Charles said you weren’t welcome here.”“It’s my house.”“It was your house.”The phone continued ringing inside. Charles Baldwin hurried through the hallway in his shirtsleeves. He had always moved as if rooms belonged to him before he entered them. He snatched up the receiver.“Yes?”Victoria could not hear the other voice, but she saw her father’s expression change. The smoothness disappeared. His jaw tightened.“That’s impossible,” he said. “She hasn’t signed anything.”Victoria’s heart slammed against her ribs.Courtney glanced at him. “Who is it?”Charles turned away from the door. “Keep her outside.”Victoria leaned toward the glass. “Dad, call an ambulance.”“You need to leave,” Courtney said.“My water broke.”Courtney’s smile sharpened. “Then you should probably find somewhere else to have your baby.”Victoria pulled out her phone with shaking fingers and called the only person Lucas had told her to trust if the world ever turned against her.“Samantha Vance.”The answer came on the second ring. “Victoria?”“I’m outside my house. My father changed the locks. My water broke, and I think I’m in labor.”Samantha’s voice became all business. “Are you bleeding?”“No.”“Is the fluid clear?”“I think so.”“Good. Sit down. Do not argue with Courtney. I’m calling emergency services, and I’m sending someone to you.”Victoria sank onto the step. “Samantha, what is happening?”There was a pause, brief but weighted.“Lucas left instructions,” Samantha said. “The house, the investment accounts, and his controlling shares in Baldwin-Gallagher Logistics were protected for you and the baby.”Victoria stared at the door. “Protected how?”“Through a marital trust and a fraud clause. Your father may have forged your signature on a transfer document.”Her breath caught. “He wouldn’t.”“He already tried to move the assets.”Inside, Charles slammed his palm against the wall.“What did he say?” Courtney asked.“Nothing,” he snapped.Samantha continued. “If your signature was forged, the attempted transfer triggers the clause. Control goes directly to you, not Charles.”“I don’t understand any of this.”“You don’t need to understand it on a porch while you’re in labor. You need to stay safe.”Sirens rose somewhere beyond the trees.Courtney opened the door a few inches but kept the chain fastened. “You can’t bring an ambulance onto private property.”“Watch me,” Victoria said. For the first time, Courtney looked uncertain.Charles came toward the entrance, his phone still in his hand. “Victoria, this is not the time to make a scene.”“You locked me out.”“You were unstable after Lucas’s death.”“I was grieving.”“Exactly.”Samantha’s voice came through the phone. “Put me on speaker.”Victoria did.“Charles Baldwin,” Samantha said, “this is Samantha Vance, counsel for the Gallagher estate. You are instructed not to remove, transfer, conceal, or damage any property belonging to Victoria Gallagher or her unborn child.”Charles’s face went pale. “You have no authority here.”“I have more authority than you think.”“She is trespassing.”“She is the legal resident and protected beneficiary of the property.”Courtney looked at Charles. “You said she signed it.”The words landed harder than the contractions.Charles turned on her. “Be quiet.”“You said the deed was done.”The ambulance pulled into the driveway. Two paramedics hurried toward Victoria.“Ma’am, can you stand?”“I can try.”One paramedic supported her elbow. The other looked toward the house. “Is there someone coming with you?”“No,” Victoria said.“I’m coming,” Courtney announced suddenly.Victoria stared at her. “You’re not family.”Courtney’s eyes flicked toward Charles. “I’m her stepmother.”“You’re staying here,” Charles said. The second paramedic guided Victoria toward the ambulance. Her phone slipped in her palm.“Samantha,” she whispered, “don’t let them take anything.”“I won’t. And Victoria?”“Yes?”“Lucas left one more instruction. We’ll discuss it when you’re safe.”Victoria climbed into the ambulance. “What instruction?”Samantha’s voice went quiet.“He said that if your father ever forced you out, you should find the message hidden behind the blue nursery wall.”The doors shut.As the ambulance pulled away, Victoria saw Charles standing in the doorway, his face rigid with fury. Courtney stood behind him, staring at her own phone.A second later, Courtney’s screen lit up.Victoria saw the message before the distance swallowed it.THE BABY IS EARLY. START THE SECOND PLAN.
