Chapter 9 - The Stranger in the Photos
I pushed the heavy steel door open and stepped into a small, windowless room that smelled heavily of stale air, hot electronics, and old paper. It wasn't a dungeon or a torture chamber like my panicked mind had feared, but what I saw inside was infinitely more terrifying in its psychological cruelty. The walls were completely covered from floor to ceiling in corkboards, and pinned tightly to them with red string were dozens of high-resolution photographs of me. But not just me. Photographs of me walking down the street in cities I didn't recognize, sitting alone in coffee shops, driving a luxury car I had never seen, talking on a cell phone—all taken secretly, from a distance, with a telephoto lens, long before I ever supposedly "met" Arthur at that charity gala. He hadn't fallen in love with me; he had been systematically, obsessively stalking me for years. I moved closer, my hands trembling uncontrollably, to a heavy metal filing cabinet in the corner and pulled it open. Inside were thick, detailed financial and legal folders with my face printed on them, but they didn't bear the name Clara Carter. The folders were boldly labeled "Chloe Vance." I pulled out original birth certificates, massive bank statements showing astronomical sums, and complex legal trust documents. As I rapidly read the papers, skimming the legalese, the truth hit me with the destructive force of a runaway freight train. I wasn't Clara. I was Chloe Vance, the sole, missing heir to the Vance tech fortune. My parents hadn't died in a tragic car accident three years ago; they had died in a private plane crash when I was twenty-five. According to the trust documents, upon turning thirty, I was set to officially inherit over two hundred million dollars. But there was a massive, terrifying legal clause highlighted in bright yellow marker sitting right on Arthur's desk: "In the event that the beneficiary is deemed mentally incompetent or institutionalized, full conservatorship and absolute financial control of the estate shall transfer immediately to her legal spouse."
