Chapter 1 - The Morning Ritual

I married for love and was absolutely certain that a beautiful, happy life was waiting for us. My husband, Arthur, had always seemed incredibly caring, calm, and attentive. Before our lavish wedding, he never once raised his voice, often surprised me with sweet, thoughtful gestures, and constantly told me that he wanted to spend his entire life making me smile. He was the perfect gentleman, almost too good to be true. But everything changed the very next morning after we returned from our honeymoon in Italy. When I woke up, the morning sunlight was streaming brightly through the bedroom blinds, and I saw that Arthur was already fully dressed in his sharp, tailored suit, getting ready to go to work. In his right hand, he was holding a crystal glass of water, and in his left, a small, unmarked white pill. "Good morning, beautiful," he said, his voice smooth and remarkably even, devoid of the warmth I was used to. "Take this, please." I sat up, rubbing the lingering sleep from my eyes, and stared at his outstretched hand. "What is it?" I asked, confused by the sudden clinical nature of our morning. "Just medicine. Your vitamins. You need to take it every day to stay strong," he replied, not breaking eye contact for a single second. I wanted to know more, to ask what exactly was in it and why I suddenly needed it, but he only smiled that charming, disarming smile of his and repeated, "Trust me, Clara. It’s important for your health." I shrugged, assuming it was just some expensive, bespoke supplement he had bought for us to start our married life right, and swallowed the pill. The next day, everything happened again. And the day after that, too. Gradually, it turned into a strange, unbreakable daily ritual. Every single morning, Arthur brought me a new white pill, waited silently until I swallowed it, and then crossed his arms, looking down at me with an unreadable expression. "Show me your tongue," he demanded one Tuesday. I laughed, thinking it was a bizarre joke. "Are you serious? Don't you trust me?" His expression didn't change; his eyes remained cold and flat. "I just want to make sure you really took it, Clara. Please." Only after I opened my mouth and showed him that the chalky pill was gone would he kiss my forehead and calmly leave for work.
