Chapter 16 - The Courthouse Surprise

Downtown, inside the private, imposing, wood-paneled chambers of Courtroom 3B, Arthur sat confidently beside his high-priced, arrogant lawyer, looking the picture of a concerned, grieving husband. Dr. Thorne sat in the witness box, looking somber and deeply professional as he fed the judge absolute, fabricated lies about my supposed violent outbursts, severe memory loss, and total, unrecoverable detachment from reality. "Your Honor," Arthur's lawyer stated smoothly, adjusting his expensive tie and leaning on the podium. "Given Mrs. Carter's tragic and rapid mental deterioration, my client is simply asking for the legal authority to manage her medical care and her complex finances, purely to protect her from herself and ensure she receives the 24-hour care she desperately requires to survive." The judge adjusted his glasses, looking over the forged, highly detailed medical file with a sympathetic sigh. "It is a deeply tragic case, indeed. If there are no objections from the state, I am prepared to grant the emergency conservatorship to—" "The defense vehemently, categorically objects, Your Honor!" The heavy wooden doors of the courtroom swung open, hitting the walls with a loud, echoing bang that made everyone in the room physically jump. Everyone in the quiet, hushed room spun around in shock. Mr. Sterling, my family's formidable, silver-haired estate lawyer, strode powerfully down the center aisle, his briefcase in hand. And right behind him, wearing a sharp, tailored black power suit, her head held high, and sporting a look of absolute, unyielding fury, was me. Arthur’s face went completely, sickeningly white, all the blood draining from his features as if he had seen a ghost. He gripped the edge of his defendant's table so hard his knuckles popped audibly, his jaw dropping in sheer, unadulterated shock. Dr. Thorne physically shrank back into his wooden chair, sweating instantly, looking like he desperately wanted to disappear into the floorboards. "What is the meaning of this disruption?" the judge demanded, banging his gavel loudly, his brow furrowed in anger. "My client, Chloe Vance, is completely of sound mind, Your Honor," Sterling announced, his voice booming across the silent room like thunder. "And she is here today to present undeniable, physical evidence of massive fraud, kidnapping by deception, chemical assault, and attempted extortion by the petitioner, Arthur Carter."
