Chapter 3 - The Secret Errand

The next morning, my heart was pounding so hard against my ribs I thought Arthur would hear it, but I forced my trembling hands to remain steady. Everything went exactly as usual. Arthur walked into the bedroom, holding the glass of water and the mysterious white pill. "Take it, Clara," he said, his tone flat and leaving no room for argument or delay. I took the pill and placed it in my mouth, but instead of swallowing it, I quickly and discreetly tucked it deep into the pocket of my cheek. I took a large gulp of water, swallowed loudly and dramatically, and then opened my mouth, lifting my tongue just as he had trained me to do over the last few months. He looked carefully, his eyes scanning the inside of my mouth, then nodded with dark satisfaction, kissed my cheek, and left for the office. As soon as I heard the heavy, metallic click of the front door locking, I rushed to the bathroom sink and spat the rapidly dissolving pill into my hand. My hands were shaking so violently that I almost dropped the slimy residue down the drain. I carefully wrapped the damp, bitter-smelling white tablet in a tissue and shoved it deep into the bottom of my purse. I threw on a heavy coat, grabbed my car keys, and practically ran out the door, terrified he might unexpectedly return. An hour later, I was standing at the reception desk of a private, independent laboratory across town, intentionally far away from our wealthy neighborhood. "I need to check the exact chemical composition of this medicine," I said quietly to the technician, sliding the tissue across the pristine counter. "I need to know exactly what it is, what the active ingredients are, and what it does to the human body." The employee bagged it professionally and handed me a printed receipt. "All right, ma'am. We will run a full mass spectrometry panel. The results will be ready in a few days." Those few days dragged on endlessly, feeling more like years. I felt like I was slowly losing my mind. I had to continue acting completely normal, pretending to take the medicine every morning and spitting it out the second Arthur drove away. But inside, the paranoia and fear kept growing stronger, twisting my stomach into tight knots.
