Chapter 18 - The Collapse of the Empire

"Get your hands off me! I am her husband! I am legally in charge of her! She's crazy, she's psychotic!" Arthur roared like a cornered, rabid animal, struggling wildly and violently against the bailiffs as they pinned his arms painfully behind his back and slapped heavy, cold metal handcuffs onto his wrists with a definitive, satisfying click. I walked slowly, deliberately over to where he was pinned to the polished floor, breathing heavily. I looked down at the man who had controlled every aspect of my life, drugged my mind, isolated me from the world, and tried to completely erase my identity for money. Without his tailored suits, his fake, charming smiles, and his illusions of control, he looked pathetic. Small. Weak. A parasite. "You're not in charge of anything anymore, Arthur," I said coldly, looking him dead in his terrified, panicked, darting eyes. "And my name isn't Clara. It's Chloe." The judge didn't just deny the conservatorship request; he immediately issued a permanent restraining order and remanded Arthur and Dr. Thorne into police custody without bail, pending severe, multi-count federal charges for extortion, medical fraud, kidnapping, and chemical assault. As the police violently dragged Arthur out of the courtroom, he was screaming my name, begging for mercy, promising he truly loved me, but I just turned my back and walked away. I walked out the double doors of the courthouse into the bright, warm sunlight with Sarah and Mr. Sterling flanking me. The long, suffocating, terrifying nightmare was finally over. The invisible, chemical chains he had wrapped around my brain were completely shattered. For the first time in a year, I breathed in the fresh air deeply, filling my lungs completely, and actually felt the warmth of the sun on my skin. I was finally, truly free.
