Chapter 15 - The Escape Plan

Friday morning arrived, and the air in the house was thick with unexpressed, suffocating, crackling tension. Arthur went through the pill ritual, and by some absolute miracle, he used water this time instead of milk, likely too distracted by his impending victory to bother testing me again. I managed to hide it tightly under my tongue, swallowing the water quickly and spitting the pill into a hidden towel the exact moment he turned to grab his car keys from the console. "I love you, Clara," he said, kissing my cheek affectionately by the front door, adjusting his silk tie in the mirror, ensuring he looked perfect for the judge. "I'll call you at two. Don't leave the house under any circumstances." "I won't," I promised, matching his fake, loving smile with one of my own. The second his luxury car pulled out of the driveway and turned the corner, I sprinted upstairs like my life depended on it, because it did. I didn't pack clothes, makeup, or jewelry; I only packed the things that mattered. I went straight to the hidden room, bypassed the scanner with the tape I had saved, and aggressively loaded all the original documents—the stalker photos, the fake medical records, the financial wire transfers to Dr. Thorne's offshore shell accounts—into a heavy, black duffel bag. At exactly 9:15 AM, a massive, black, armored SUV pulled up to the front of my house. I threw open the door to find Marcus the investigator and Sarah standing there. Sarah threw her arms around me, bursting into tears of sheer relief and fierce love. "Chloe, you're safe now," she sobbed, holding me incredibly tight. "Let's go," Marcus said urgently, his eyes scanning the street for any threats, taking the heavy duffel bag from my shaking hands. "The hearing starts in forty-five minutes. Mr. Sterling is already at the courthouse sitting with the judge. We are going to completely crash his little victory party." As I climbed into the back of the SUV, I looked back at the sprawling, beautiful, terrifying house that had been my psychological prison for the last year. I wasn't Clara the medicated, compliant, broken victim anymore. I was Chloe Vance, and I was going to war.
