Chapter 4 - Before Dinner Began

Tessa sent me the original recording at 1:42 a.m.

Rachel and I sat side by side on the couch.

Neither of us spoke.

The livestream had started twelve minutes before I realized Tessa was filming.

For the first several minutes, relatives waved at the camera.

Margaret showed off her birthday cake.

Evan poured wine.

Maisie played with a wooden spoon.

Then Tessa carried her phone into the kitchen while still streaming.

The camera pointed toward the ceiling.

The image was useless.

But the audio was clear.

Margaret’s voice came first.

“She’s been difficult again.”

Then Patricia.

“Difficult is not enough.”

I stopped breathing.

Margaret lowered her voice.

“What would be enough?”

Patricia answered.

“A documented pattern.”

There was the sound of a drawer closing.

“What kind?”

“Anger.”

My throat tightened.

“Threats.”

Rachel grabbed my hand.

“Public outbursts.”

Then Margaret laughed softly.

“That should not be hard.”

Patricia continued.

“If Evan genuinely intends to pursue primary custody, we need more than complaints from his mother.”

Evan’s voice entered the recording.

“I said I’m not sure.”

My entire body went still.

He had been there.

Before dinner.

Before Maisie spilled the soup.

Before I slapped him.

Evan already knew.

Margaret replied.

“You promised me you would protect your daughter.”

“I am protecting her.”

“From Claire?”

“That’s not what I said.”

Patricia interrupted them.

“Decide what you want before you create evidence you cannot explain later.”

The recording continued.

Footsteps.

A cabinet door.

Then Margaret said something that made Rachel pause the video.

“By January, Claire needs to be out of that house.”

Rachel looked at me.

“What house?”

“My house.”

Technically, the house belonged to both Evan and me.

At least that was what I had always believed.

We had moved into it after our wedding.

My father had contributed most of the down payment.

Evan and I had paid the mortgage together.

But Margaret had always spoken about it as if it were part of the Bennett family legacy.

Rachel restarted the video.

Evan whispered.

“And if she refuses?”

Margaret answered.

“She won’t have a choice.”

The kitchen door opened.

The conversation stopped.

Then the livestream returned to birthday chatter.

For ten minutes, everyone smiled.

Then soup spilled.

Margaret screamed.

Maisie cried.

And Margaret struck her.

The full video showed everything.

Including my three slaps.

I did not regret defending my daughter.

But I knew a courtroom would not care about my anger the same way I did.

Rachel leaned back.

“What does she mean by January?”

I opened our banking app.

Our joint savings account looked normal.

Checking looked normal.

Then I noticed our home equity account.

A line of credit I did not remember opening.

Balance owed.

$186,000.

My mouth went dry.

I clicked for details.

The borrower names appeared.

EVAN BENNETT.

CLAIRE BENNETT.

May you like

And beneath them was a digital signature bearing my name.

I had never signed it.
