Chapter 11 - Evan Finally Chose

Evan came to Dana’s office two days later without Patricia.
He looked ten years older.
Dana had advised me not to meet him alone.
So Rachel stayed nearby.
Evan placed an envelope on the conference table.
“What’s this?”
“Copies of everything I signed.”
“How many things?”
He did not answer.
I opened the envelope.
The home equity paperwork.
Maisie’s trust.
The life insurance policy.
Draft guardianship documents.
And one document I had never seen.
A postnuptial agreement.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
Forged again.
I looked at Evan.
“You knew?”
“No.”
I laughed once.
There was nothing funny in it.
“You want me to believe that now?”
“I knew about the loan.”
“And the custody discussions.”
“Yes.”
“And the trust.”
“Yes.”
“But not this?”
“No.”
Dana examined the document.
The notary stamp belonged to a man named Gerald Knox.
Margaret’s longtime business associate.
Dana looked at Evan.
“Did you sign this?”
“Yes.”
“Did your wife?”
“I thought she had.”
“How?”
“My mother told me Claire signed earlier.”
“You never asked your wife?”
Evan lowered his head.
“No.”
I felt something inside me finally stop hoping.
For years, I had wanted Evan to become stronger.
I had imagined the right conversation might wake him up.
But strength was not waiting inside him like a sleeping animal.
He would have to build it.
And I no longer had the energy to be the person building it for him.
“Why are you giving me this?”
He looked at me.
“Because Mom called me last night.”
“And?”
“She told me to say you had been drinking before dinner.”
My skin went cold.
“I wasn’t.”
“I know.”
“She wanted you to lie?”
“Yes.”
“What did you say?”
“I said no.”
It was the smallest possible act of courage.
Yet I knew what it cost him.
Margaret had controlled Evan through approval his entire life.
Saying no to her once would feel like stepping off a roof.
He continued.
“Then she said if I didn’t cooperate, she would make sure I lost everything too.”
Dana leaned forward.
“What exactly did she mean?”
“She said the Parker building debt is in my name.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
Evan swallowed.
“She didn’t use the $186,000 only as a down payment.”
“How much debt?”
“Almost $900,000.”
My heart pounded.
“Evan.”
“I signed guarantees.”
“Why?”
“Because she told me the building would become Maisie’s inheritance.”
Dana’s expression hardened.
“Do you have copies?”
Evan nodded.
May you like
Then he said something none of us expected.
“I also recorded my mother.”
