Chapter 2 - The Missing Twenty Seconds

Rachel opened her apartment door before I even knocked.

She saw Maisie’s cheek.

Then she saw my face.

“Oh my God.”

“Don’t ask yet.”

She took Maisie from me carefully.

“I won’t.”

That was the difference between Rachel and Evan.

Rachel did not demand explanations before offering safety.

She simply helped.

We put Maisie to sleep in Rachel’s guest room.

The redness on her cheek had faded slightly, but I photographed it from three angles.

Then I photographed the time.

Then the yellow sock that had slipped under her heel.

Then the dark green smear of soup still on her sleeve.

I suddenly understood that I might need to prove every detail.

Back in the living room, Rachel showed me her phone.

The edited clip had spread quickly.

I appeared furious.

Evan appeared stunned.

Margaret was barely visible.

People in the comments were calling me unstable.

Violent.

Dangerous.

A woman who should not be around children.

My hands began shaking.

“This was deliberate.”

Rachel nodded.

“Do you have the full livestream?”

“I don’t.”

“Tessa does.”

As if summoned by her name, my phone rang.

Tessa.

I answered.

Her breathing sounded fast.

“Claire, listen to me.”

“Did you post that clip?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

“I think Mom’s friend Cynthia did.”

“Think?”

“Mom took my phone after you left.”

I stood up.

“What?”

“She demanded the livestream recording.”

“Did you give it to her?”

“I didn’t have a choice.”

“There is always a choice.”

“I know.”

Her voice cracked.

“But you need to understand something.”

I waited.

“The original livestream saved automatically to my account.”

My pulse jumped.

“So you still have it?”

There was a pause.

“Maybe.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means Mom changed my password fifteen minutes ago.”

Rachel stared at me.

I put the phone on speaker.

“Tessa, can you recover it?”

“I’m trying.”

Then someone knocked on Rachel’s door.

Three hard knocks.

Rachel frowned.

“It’s almost midnight.”

I looked through the peephole.

Evan stood in the hallway.

He was not alone.

Beside him was a woman I recognized from Margaret’s Christmas parties.

Patricia Sloan.

A family law attorney.

Evan raised a folder toward the peephole as though he knew I was watching.

“Claire.”

His voice came through the door.

“We need to discuss Maisie.”

I opened the door only two inches.

The security chain stayed latched.

Evan looked exhausted.

Patricia looked perfectly prepared.

“What is this?”

Patricia answered.

“Your husband is concerned about tonight’s incident.”

I almost laughed.

“His mother slapped our toddler.”

“And you repeatedly struck your husband.”

“After he sat there doing nothing.”

Patricia gave me a cold smile.

“That distinction may matter emotionally.”

She raised the folder.

“But legally, we now have video showing you committing violence in front of your child.”

I stared at Evan.

He could not hold my gaze.

That was when I realized the edited video was not just about public humiliation.

May you like

It was evidence.

Someone had prepared to use it.
