Chapter 18 - The Victory That Wasn’t

The original will had been filed with Evan’s father’s attorney.
Margaret had apparently removed the family copy but could not erase the legal record.
Within a week, Evan and Tessa filed an action challenging Margaret’s control of Bennett Family Holdings.
The bank reversed the disputed home equity transaction pending investigation.
Gerald Knox surrendered through an attorney.
Patricia withdrew from representing Margaret in the custody matter, citing a conflict.
For the first time, it felt like we were winning.
That frightened me.
Because easy victories rarely arrive in families like ours.
Then Evan asked to come home.
Not to move back in.
Just to talk.
I agreed to meet him on the front porch.
Our house felt abandoned.
I had not slept there in weeks.
Evan sat on the step beside me.
“I started therapy.”
I nodded.
“I should have done it years ago.”
“Yes.”
He smiled sadly.
“I knew you’d say that.”
“What do you want, Evan?”
He looked through the window.
“I want to know if there is any chance.”
I knew what he meant.
Marriage.
Us.
The answer hurt.
“I don’t know.”
He looked down.
“That’s fair.”
“No.”
I took a breath.
“I do know.”
He looked at me.
“I’m filing for divorce.”
His face collapsed.
But he nodded.
“Okay.”
“I don’t want to destroy you.”
“You could.”
“I know.”
“I deserve some of it.”
“This isn’t about punishment.”
He wiped his eyes.
“I know.”
“I want Maisie to have a father.”
“I want to be one.”
“Then become one.”
He looked at me.
“Without you?”
“Yes.”
That was the cruelest truth.
Sometimes people change.
Sometimes they even change because losing you forces them to.
That does not mean you owe them your return.
Evan nodded slowly.
“I’ll sign a fair custody agreement.”
“We’ll let the lawyers handle it.”
“Okay.”
Then his phone rang.
Tessa.
He answered.
Her voice was panicked.
“Evan, turn on the news.”
We went inside.
A local station was reporting that Margaret Hale had been taken to the hospital.
She had collapsed during questioning.
The headline below her photograph read.
LOCAL BUSINESSWOMAN HOSPITALIZED AMID FAMILY FRAUD ALLEGATIONS.
Evan stared at the television.
Then his phone vibrated again.
A message from an unknown number.
Your mother says if she dies, Claire will have caused it.
Attached was a photograph.
