Chapter 1 - The Room After the Slap

Nobody moved.
Evan stood beside the dining table with one hand pressed against his cheek.
His glasses floated crookedly in the mushroom soup.
Margaret stared at me as if I had committed a crime inside her church.
But I was no longer looking at either of them.
I was looking at Maisie.
She was still crying.
Her tiny body trembled in Margaret’s arms.
“Give me my daughter.”
Margaret tightened her grip.
“You’re hysterical, Claire.”
That was the first time anyone had said my name since Margaret struck Maisie.
My name is Claire Bennett.
I had been married to Evan Bennett for six years.
For most of those six years, I had believed patience was the same thing as strength.
I had been wrong.
“Give her to me.”
Margaret lifted her chin.
“You just assaulted my son three times.”
“And you hit a two-year-old.”
“She needed discipline.”
“She spilled soup.”
“She threw it.”
“She is two.”
Margaret looked around the room for support.
Nobody met her eyes.
Then I noticed Tessa.
Her phone was still raised.
The livestream was still running.
Margaret noticed it too.
“Tessa.”
Her voice changed immediately.
“Turn that off.”
Tessa hesitated.
That hesitation lasted less than two seconds.
But it mattered.
Because Margaret crossed the room and grabbed for the phone.
Tessa pulled it back.
“Mom, people already saw it.”
Margaret froze.
“What did they see?”
Tessa swallowed.
“Everything.”
Something cold entered Margaret’s expression.
She finally handed Maisie to me.
My daughter buried her face against my neck.
Her crying softened into frightened little gasps.
I kissed the top of her hair.
Then I walked toward the front door.
Evan followed me.
“Claire, wait.”
I kept walking.
“We need to talk.”
“No.”
“You can’t just leave.”
I turned.
“Watch me.”
His eyes dropped to Maisie.
“Where are you going?”
“Somewhere she won’t be slapped for spilling soup.”
Margaret stepped into the hallway.
“If you walk out that door, don’t expect to come crawling back tomorrow.”
I looked at her.
“I stopped crawling a long time ago.”
I carried Maisie into the cold November night.
Behind me, Evan called my name again.
I never turned around.
Twenty minutes later, while driving toward my sister Rachel’s apartment, my phone began vibrating.
Dozens of messages.
Then hundreds.
The livestream had been screen-recorded.
Someone had posted it online.
But when I opened the first video, my stomach dropped.
The clip started with me slapping Evan.
Margaret hitting Maisie had been cut out.
