Chapter 12 - Margaret’s Voice

The recording was eighteen minutes long.
Evan had placed his phone on his kitchen counter after Margaret arrived at our house.
The house I had not returned to since the birthday dinner.
Her voice filled Dana’s office.
“You are throwing away your family over a woman who assaulted you.”
Evan answered.
“She assaulted me after you hit Maisie.”
“I corrected Maisie.”
“She is two.”
“You were corrected at two.”
Silence.
Then Margaret laughed.
“And look how well you turned out.”
I looked at Evan.
He did not look at me.
The recording continued.
Margaret told him the public story had already been prepared.
I was unstable.
I was financially irresponsible.
I was isolating Maisie from her father.
I had a history of “aggressive behavior.”
Evan asked about the forged postnuptial agreement.
Margaret became quiet.
Then she said.
“You should be thanking me.”
“For forging Claire’s signature?”
“For protecting you.”
“That’s fraud.”
“Only if she proves it.”
Dana paused the recording.
“That is useful.”
“Useful?”
“It is not a confession to everything.”
“But?”
“But it is very close to one important part.”
We continued.
At minute fourteen, Evan asked why Margaret had moved him away from Maisie at dinner.
Margaret denied doing it.
He mentioned the seating chart.
Then came a long silence.
Finally Margaret said.
“You were supposed to let Claire expose herself.”
My stomach tightened.
“Did you hit Maisie to provoke Claire?”
Evan asked.
Margaret’s voice became furious.
“Do not be disgusting.”
“Then why did you hit her?”
“Because she ruined my rug and laughed.”
Maisie had not laughed.
She had cried.
“You scared her.”
“She needs to learn.”
Evan’s voice broke.
“She’s a baby.”
Then Margaret said something that ended every remaining illusion I had about her.
“Children belong to the family that can shape them before someone else does.”
I felt Rachel’s hand close around mine.
The recording ended with Evan telling his mother to leave.
She threatened him again.
Then the door slammed.
For the first time since the birthday dinner, Evan had chosen against her.
But it did not erase the years before it.
After the meeting, he waited for me in the hallway.
“Claire.”
I stopped.
“I know I destroyed us.”
I said nothing.
“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
His eyes filled.
“I just want to help fix what I helped her do.”
I looked at him.
“Then tell the truth.”
“All of it.”
“Even when it makes you look terrible.”
He nodded.
May you like
“I will.”
That evening, Margaret filed for emergency grandparent visitation.
