Chapter 21 - DR. COLE RETIRES

Nathan Cole retired from surgery at sixty-seven.
The Costanzos held a dinner because apparently no one in our family could stop turning ordinary milestones into banquets.
Alessia gave him a gift.
Not expensive.
A framed note:
DON’T MOVE.
The first words he told her on the ballroom floor.
Dr. Cole laughed.
Then told the story properly.
He emphasized:
Do not pull someone upright after a fall with neurological symptoms.
Keep still.
Assess.
Call emergency services.
No heroic family handling.
I appreciated that.
Then he looked at me.
“And do not slap the bride.”
May you like
Everyone laughed.
I did not.
