Chapter 15 - VERONICA’S APOLOGY

Veronica asked to speak to Alessia after the no-contact period expired.
Alessia waited another six months.
Her choice.
They met at Marcus’s office.
I did not attend.
Later Alessia told me enough.
Veronica said:
“I wanted everyone to laugh at you.”
Not:
It was a joke.
Good.
Then:
“I knew you hated being treated like your injury defined you, and I used that.”
Better.
Then:
“I did not think you would lose feeling in your foot.”
Alessia asked:
“If I had only been embarrassed, would you regret it?”
Silence.
That was the real question.
Veronica eventually answered:
“Not then.”
Honest.
Then:
“Now?”
“Yes.”
Alessia accepted the apology.
Did she forgive?
May you like
“Maybe seventy percent.”
Our family had become disturbingly quantitative.
